The Cair Paravel Latin boys basketball team held off a late rally by Mission Valley to beat the Vikings 48-40 at Cair Paravel Thursday.
The Lions built an 18-point lead by the middle of the third period, but saw that margin evaporate quickly.

Mission Valley used a 13-2 run to get back in the contest, eventually whittling the Cair Paravel lead to just three points with a minute remaining.
“There’s a lot of momentum that happens,” Cair Paravel coach Chip Kueffer said. “There for a moment we were playing not to lose. You always want to play to win. In the first half, we took some bad shots that went in. That’s sort of fool’s gold. That catches up to you.''
The Lions were handcuffed by fouls which sent several of their players to the bench for extended stretches. The Lions committed 17 fouls in the first period alone.
“You can write it on the white board but sometimes the game gets away from you. You’ve got to control what you can control,” Kueffer said. “Fortunately, we had a lot of guys come in off the bench and make contributions early. I’m grateful for the way we handled the adversity.”
Most notably, Cair Paravel senior Rich Hembold come into the game and drilled three 3-pointers in the second period.
When it got down to crunch time, it was senior guard Simon Everhart who came through. He scored 10 of the Lions’ last 13 points, mainly by knocking down eight of nine free throws in the second half.

“Evan Will, Simon Everhart, Ty Gossard, those guys made big plays in the last three or four minutes,” Kueffer said. “We kind of made it hard on ourselves, but those guys kept their composure and finished the game for us.”

The Cair Paravel Latin School cheer squad is a perfect three for three in state championship competition.
After becoming full Kansas State High School Activities Association members in the fall of 2020, the Lions’ cheer squad has participated in three state competitions and has yet to take home anything but gold.

For a school finding success quickly in KSHSAA competition, it is the cheer squad which leads the way.
Head cheerleading coach Courtney Bond took over leadership of the team in the fall of 2020. She presented the challenge of competition to the team that year, and they began preparing for the next year’s championship, held each fall.
“I had competed in cheerleading competitions in high school (in Ohio), so it was something that I was familiar with,” Bond said. “When I presented the idea to the girls, they were all about it. So, we went and competed in (Class) 1A and were pleasantly surprised to bring home the championship.”

“We went into it with no expectations, just trying to work our hardest and do the best we could,” said Isabel Gateley, the lone senior to have been part of all three championships. “None of us had ever been in a cheer competition before. Most of us had never even performed in front of that many people before. We went into it a little shocked, but we did our best and it really showed.
“That set the stage for the next couple of years. As each year went on, the expectations got a little higher. But we went with it and met those expectations.”

"It's really exciting to see the growth personally, just being in practice and getting reps in,'' Pridgett said after Monday's 3-1 home MIAA win over Emporia State. "It's always fun to see the work have a high result. It's fun.
"I love being out there and I love building trust with my teammates. I think that's been the most important thing is just slowly building trust through practice and in games.''

With the second overtime period about to elapse, Cair Paravel’s Alfredo Cartes lofted a corner kick into the opposing box, where teammate Nathan Keys rose above the crowd to head the ball past the visiting goalkeeper.
Though Cair Paravel finished the regular season with a record of just 4-7, there was plenty at stake for the Lions.
In addition to improving their standing in the Class 4-1A seeding and potentially setting up a more favorable post-season matchup, the Lions felt they had some unfinished business to attend to.
In its previous meeting with Maranatha, Cair Paravel trailed 3-2 when the game was ended prematurely due to weather. The Lions didn’t forget, believing they stood a good chance of tying, and ultimately winning, that contest.
“We were cut off short the last time we played them. So, it felt really good to get this win,” said Justus Scott, the Lions’ lone senior and team captain. “The defense really shut down their offense, and our offense did really well, so I’m proud.”

A year ago, the Lions just missed out on qualifying for the Eight-Man Division I playoffs in their first season of football as a KSHSAA member.
The Lions went into Friday’s game against Chase County knowing they were in the playoffs at 4-2 and 2-1 in their district. But with seeding and a chance to host a home playoff game at stake, they took care of business against the visiting Bulldogs.
The Lions trailed once, momentarily, early in the contest. After junior quarterback Jace Pavlik put the Lions up 6-0 with a short run, Cair Paravel watched Chase County’s Tucker Groh race 70 yards with the ensuing kickoff, putting the Bulldogs up 8-6.
Not to be outdone, Cair Paravel’s Jesiah Bonura returned the favor, taking the next kickoff back 60 yards to put the Lions back on top.
From that point on, the Lions’ defense ensured the score was never close again. Cair Paravel limited the Bulldogs to zero yards passing and negative-19 yards rushing in the first half. The visitors did not earn a first down until the fourth quarter.
“Our defense was amazing,” Pavlik said. “Look at the scoreboard. Sixteen points, and one of those scores was on a kickoff return. Our defense did an incredible job stepping up this game. Our offense, we made some plays, but our defense was just awesome tonight.”

That certainly proved to be the case as the Lions finished 3-5 after an up-and-down campaign and came up short of their goal of advancing to the Eight-Man Division I playoffs out of District 2.
"Last year was kind of a year of getting things figured out, going into KSHSAA for the first time, and not knowing half the teams we played,'' Bonura said. "That's half your battle when you know what you're getting into.
"Last year we were really hoping to get into the playoffs. We thought we had a chance, and we did have a chance, but we just didn't put two and two together to make it happen and we played some really good teams.''
But with a strong, senior-laden returning nucleus, Bonura is confident his team can make some major moves this fall.
