Highland Park got off to somewhat of a slow start in Tuesday's Class 5A boys sub-state semifinal against Kansas City-Turner, but opened up a double-digit advantage by halftime and turned the game into a rout with a 33-point third quarter on the way to an 85-43 win at Topeka High.

The Scots led the Bears by just a 19-18 advantage at the end of the opening quarter but used a 20-9 second quarter to take a 39-27 advantage at the halftime break and outscored Turner 33-9 in the third quarter to take a 72-36 lead and force a running clock throughout the fourth quarter.
Senior Amari Taylor led Highland Park, now 20-1, with 25 points, followd by junior Mikey Williams with 21 points, junior Ja'Corey Robinson with 16 points and senior Tamir Anderson with 12 points on four 3-pointers.

Highland Park advanced to Friday's sub-state championship game to face the winner of the semifinal between Kansas City-Washington and Bonner Springs.
The sub-state championship game will be played at Topeka West, with the sub-state winner advancing to next week's Class 5A state tournament at Emporia's White Auditorium.
WASHBURN RURAL GIRLS 61, WICHITA NORTHWEST 24
The ‘second season’ began on Tuesday night with the first round of the sub-state tournament. The Grizzlies of Wichita Northwest
traveled to Washburn Rural to the Class 6A girls sub-state championship game on Friday night. The game was close in the first eight minutes, but Washburn Rural pulled away over the final three quarters to win, 61-24.

In the first three minutes of the game, Northwest (5-16) jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but Rural (14-7) answered with an 11-0 run to end the quarter, leading 13-7.
The Junior Blues extended their lead to 23-11, but the Grizzlies responded with and 8-0 run to cut the lead to 23-19. However, Rural closed the first half on a 9-0 run to lead 32-19 at the break.
The Junior Blues came out of the locker room after halftime on fire, making their first seven shots and extending their lead to 50-22.
Early in the fourth quarter, Rural extended the lead above 30 points, which led to a running clock for the remainder of the game.
The Lady Blues were led in scoring by freshman Maddie Vickery with 18 points and junior Tenly Bunck with 16. Vickery grabbed nine rebounds and dished out five assists. Senior Zoe Canfield had four assists and Bunck had five steals.
The Grizzlies were led by junior Aaliyah Richard with 10 points and sophomore Anish Simpson grabbed 5 rebounds..
Washburn Rural will now travel to Wichita on Friday night to take on the Titans of Wichita South for the sub-state championship. It will be a rematch of the championship game of the Capital City Classic in late January where Wichita South defeated Rural 44-38 in overtime. -- From Charles Spurlock

HAYDEN GIRLS 84, KC-WARD 12
The top-seeded Hayden girls rolled to Friday's semifinals in the Royal Valley Class 3A sub-state with an 84-12 home romp past Kansas City-Bishop Ward Tuesday hight.
The 17-4 Wildcats will face Atchison County, a 40-31 winner over Perry-Lecompton, at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Royal Valley.
Junior Amelia Ramsey led Hayden with 17 points while while seniors Avery Grunert and Lauren Sandstrom added 12 points apiece and Reagan Huscher had 10. Grunert scored all 12 of her points on 3-pointers.
SILVER LAKE GIRLS 74, MARYSVILLE 48
Undefeated and top-ranked Silver Lake advanced to the semifinals in the Riley County Class 3A sub-state with a 74-48 home quarterfinal win over Marysville Tuesday night.
The Eagles, now 21-0, will play Minneapolis, a 44-42 overtime winner over Beloit, at 6 p.m. Friday at Riley County.
Silver Lake senior star Makenzie McDaniel scored 30 points to lead the Eagles against Marysville while senior McKinley Kruger added 21 points.
The Eagles opened up a 35-21 halftime lead, led 50-37 at the start of the fourth quarter and pulled away with a 24-11 fourth-quarter advantage.
ROSSVILLE GIRLS 38, RILEY COUNTY 28
Riley County put up a battle against Mid-East League rival Rossville for most of the way before the Bulldawgs clinched a 38-28 Class 3A sub-state quarterfinal victory down the stretch Tuesday at Rossville.
Rossville led by just an 11-10 margin at the end of the opening quarter and 18-15 at halftime.
The Falcons were still within four points (29-25) at the start of the fourth quarter before the Bulldawgs held a 9-3 scoring edge the rest of the way.
Freshman Nora Burdiek paced Rossville (18-3) with 13 points while sophomore Rylee Dick added 11 points with two 3-pointers.
Rossville will face off against St. Marys in a 7:30 p.m. sub-state semifinal Friday night at Riley County.
MANHATTAN GIRLS 62, TOPEKA HIGH 43
Manhattan beat Centennial League rival Topeka High for the third time Tuesday night at Manhattan, with the Indians taking a 62-43 Class 6A sub-state semifinal win over the Trojans.
Manhattan is now 11-10 on the season while Topeka High ended its season with a 5-15 record.
Manhattan will play at Liberal Friday night.
JEFFERSON COUNTY NORTH BOYS 51, CAIR PARAVEL 38
Jefferson County North advanced to the semifinals of the Class 2A Jefferson County North sub-state with a 51-38 win over Cair Paravel Latin Tuesday night.
Cair Paravel ended its season 12-9.
