Freshman Pearmella Carter turned in a huge 38-point, 18-rebound performance Friday night as Highland Park's girls basketball team bounced back from a loss to perennial Class 5A state champion St. Thomas Aquinas with a 66-30 Meadowlark Conference road win over Kansas City-Wyandotte.

Carter hit 18 of 27 shots from the floor and went two of three from the free throw line in the Highland Park win while also recording six steals.

Carter was backed by Angelique Gowan-Britt with 15 points, 9 assists and 6 steals while Tahtionna Broils scored eight points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Highland Park led 15-7 at the end of the opening quarter and 28-17 at the half before outscoring the Bulldogs 38-13 in the second half.

Now 7-4 on the season and undefeated in conference play, Highland Park will travel to Atchison on Monday for a Meadowlark Conference contest.

West girls take 58-21 runaway UKC decision over KC-Turner

Having lost four of its last five games at the start of the night, Topeka West's girls got back on track in a big way Friday night, taking a 58-21 home United Kansas Conference victory over Kansas City-Turner.

The Chargers started somewhat slowly, scoring seven of their 11 first-quarter points from the free throw line, but West still led 11-5 and then put the game out of reach with an 18-4 second quarter that gave West 29-9 halftime advantage.

West then used a 16-8 third quarter to take a 45-17 advantage and forced a running clock early in the final stanze.

Topeka West, who improved to 6-9 overall and 5-6 in the UKC, had impressive balance against the Bears, with four players scoring nine or more points.

Sophomore Imani McGloy led the Chargers with a game-high 15 points while senior Rebecca Bearman added 12 points, senior Zoe Clark 11 and sophomore Teairra Gonzales nine points.

The Bears did not have a player with more than six points.

Topeka West will be at home again on Tuesday, hosting Shawnee Heights in a UKC contest.

Rossville boys bounce back with 72-52 Mid-East romp

After having its seven-game winning streak snapped by Rock Creek, Rossville's boys basketball answered with a 72-52 Mid-East League victory over Wabaunsee Friday night.

All five Bulldawg starters cracked double figures, led by junior Kameron Badura with 16 points.

Sophomore Jack Donovan scored 14 points with two 3-pointers while juniors Mason Jones and Tayson Horak and sophomore Cameron Miller added 11 points apiece. Horak hit three 3-pointers on the night.

Rossville, 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the league, took control with a 24-13 first-quarter lead and led 40-24 at the half and 62-39 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Rossville will travel to Osage City on Tuesday.

Lady Bulldawgs improve 14-1 with 65-42 win over Wabaunsee

Sophomore Rylee Dick led the way with 20 points Friday night as Rossville improved to 14-1 overall and 5-1 in the Mid-East League with a 65-42 win over Wabaunsee.

Dick, who hit three 3-pointers, was one of four Rossville players with nine or more points.

Freshman Nora Burdiek scored 15 points for the Bulldawgs while senior Kinley Porter added 10 points with two 3-pointers and senior Kinsey Perine had nine points with a pair of 3s.

Rossville led 12-5 at the end of the first quarter and 28-15 at the half before outscoring the Chargers 37-27 in the second half.

T-Bird boys improve to 11-3 with 46-point UKC rout

Shawnee Heights' boys basketball team posted its 11th win in 12 games on Friday night, taking an 80-34 United Kansas Conference victory at Leavenworth.

Shawnee Heights, 11-3 overall and 8-2 in the UKC, used 10 players in the game and all 10 cracked the scoring column.

Senior Dylan Sanchez scored 12 points with four 3-pointers while junior Deacon Pomeroy added 11 points and senior Brennon Dodge and junior Jaret Sanchez scored 10 apiece.

No Heights players played more than a half against the Pioneers.  

Heights girls post fourth straight victory

Shawnee Heights' girls basketball team improved to 9-5 on the season with Friday's 53-41 United Kansas Conference win at Leavenworth.

The T-Birds have now won four straight games, improving to 7-3 in the UKC.

Topeka High girls pick up first Centennial League win

Topeka High's girls picked up their first Centennial League win of the year Friday night at Topeka High, with the Trojans rolling to a 63-39 win over Junction City.

The Trojans improved to 4-10 overall and 1-4 in the league.

Topeka High will return to action Tuesday at Manhattan.

 Trojans fall to Junction City, 83-49

Junction City rolled to an 83-49 Centennial League win at Topeka High on Friday.

Topeka High fell to 5-10 overall and 1-4 in the league while Junction City improved to 13-2 overall and 4-1 in the league.

The Trojans will travel to Manhattan on Tuesday.

Rural boys continue hot streak with road win over Emporia

After starting the season 0-6, Washburn Rural's boys basketball team has become one of the toughest outs in the Centennial League.

The Junior Blues posted their sixth win over their last eight games Friday night, taking a 48-31 Centennial road win at Emporia.

Washburn Rural improved to 6-8 overall and 3-1 in the league.

Rural will travel to Manhattan on Monday for a league contest.

No. 5-ranked Spartans top No. 8 Rural

Emporia's girls recorded their first win over Washburn Rural since 2007, with the No. 5-ranked (5A) Spartans rolling to a 43-22 home Centennial League win over the No. 8-ranked (6A) Junior Blues.

Washburn Rural fell to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in the league while Emporia added a makeup win over Junction City on Saturday and is now 13-1 overall and 5-0 in the league.

Rural will play at Manhattan on Monday.
