A furious comeback by Cair Paravel Latin fell short Tuesday night in a Kaw Valley Conference battle against Bishop Seabury, with the Lions falling at home, 69-62.
A cold second quarter found the Lions trailing 34-21 at the half and the Seahawks stretched their lead to 55-38 to start the fourth period.
The Lions, led by junior Jace Pavlik, came roaring back. Pavlik fired in 14 points in the fourth period as the Lions ramped up fullcourt pressure and rattled the visiting Seahawks.
The Lions shaved the deficit to 65-59 and nearly made it a one-possession game when a 3-point attempt by Cair Paravel senior Simon Everhart rattled out with just under two minutes remaining.
Bishop Seabury made just enough of its free throws to hold off the home team down the stretch.
“We had a lid on the cup for a little bit,” Cair Paravel coach Chip Kueffer said. “There were some things that we could have done to help ourselves out. But all in all, that’s basketball. It’s a game of runs. So, you’ve got to be able to take ‘em on the chin and punch back.”
All but two of Bishop Seabury’s points were produced by four players. Jace Smith led with 25. Aidan Page scored 21. Chase Honarvar had 11 and Jace Hoffman had 10.
“They’re talented,” Kueffer said of the Seahawks, who improved to 7-3. “They’ve got a lot of good players, and they can hit shots.”
Simon Everhart led 6-5 Cair Paravel with 21 points. Pavlik finished with 20. Cameron Brian pitched in 10 points, all of which came in the second half.
“We’ve got some talented kids,” Kueffer said. “They listen well. They listen better than they looked today. So, I’m a little bit frustrated that we showed how good we can play. But we’ve got to be able to play all four quarters that way.
“I think there’s plenty of room to improve, but I’m optimistic.”
