WU women shock No. 15-ranked Jennies, advance to MIAA semifinals

The Washburn University women's basketball team ended the second quarter with a 13-3 scoring run to take the lead and never looked back as the No. 7-seeded Ichabods upset No. 2 seed and No. 15-ranked Central Missouri 63-55 Wednesday night on the road in the MIAA Tournament quarterfinals.

The Ichabods, who improved to 12-11, will travel to Hays to take on No. 3 seed Nebraska-Kearney in an MIAA semifinal at 4 p.m. on Saturday. 

Senior Hunter Bentley, a second-team All-MIAA selection, hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the final minute and a half of the first quarter to keep the game within two points (10-8) in favor of the Jennies.

Seaman boys survive Emporia, 60-56, advance to 5A sub-state final

In Wednesday night’s 60-56 Class 5A boys sub-state victory over Emporia, nobody came up bigger for the Vikings than sophomore Aron Davis and junior Mateo Hyman.

The two shared team-high scoring honors with 18 points each and when Seaman needed clutch free throws down the stretch, Davis and Hyman stepped up each time.

“I felt like we maintained our poise when it wasn’t looking good for us,'' Seaman coach Craig Cox said. "We got to the free throw line and knocked quite a few down which really helped us.''.
