As it turns out, not everything that happens in Las Vegas stays there.

More than two years ago, an impromptu Vegas chat over brunch between a few friends led to what on Jan. 1 will be the official unveiling of TopSports.news, a website devoted to local sports.

With my retirement in the newspaper industry looming after four decades, we talked that day about the possibility of doing something to continue our decades-long commitment to local sports.

The focus, we agreed, had to be on Shawnee County high school sports, but we also wanted to make sure we included Washburn University, as well as various other athletic activities that have made the area a hotbed for outstanding individuals and teams over the years. Another key priority was to make sure that the content we provided would be free of charge to anyone who would be kind enough to want to view it, and through the support of current and future partners, we will accomplish that goal.

We talked about wanting to promote local athletes and teams past and present and the fact that we wanted to do our best to not just provide coverage for one or two sports but for all 22 sports offered by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.

Although we know there will be times we have to deal with tough issues and topics, we want the focus to be on the positive nature of sports and provide balanced coverage of the activities that are so important to all of us.

Moving forward we will count on many of the same people -- writers, photographers, coaches, athletic directors, etc. -- that we have counted on for decades for their insight and cooperation.

We want TopSports.news to be something the entire community can enjoy and contribute to. To that end we welcome any and all story ideas and suggestions which can be emailed to us or posted on our various social media accounts

If we’ve learned anything over the past nine-plus months as we’ve battled the coronavirus, it’s how much we value and have missed local sports.

As we inch back towards normalcy, we long for the day of full stadiums and gymnasiums and are honored to be part of that amazing comeback.

Welcome to TopSports.news!
