Washburn Rural boys tennis team may not have any stars, at this point anyway, but the Junior Blues showed off their depth in Saturday's Washburn Rural quadrangular at Kossover Tennis Center, posting a perfect 3-0 record while winning 24 of 27 matches on the day in Rural's first competition since 2019.
Kevin Hedberg's team opened the day with a 6-3 win over Hayden before taking 9-0 wins over Topeka High and Junction City. Hayden finished second in the quad, following up its loss to Washburn Rural with an 8-1 win over Junction City and a 9-0 decision over Topeka High.
"It's just great to be out here, but the other side of it is all of us, since we missed a season, everybody needs match play, everybody needs experience and, quite frankly, you don't need it playing your teammates,'' Hedberg said. "You get it when you play other people, so this was a good day.''
The Junior Blues got singles wins from juniors Nick Luetje (No. 3), sophomore Mason Casebeer (No. 4), juniors Jack Kramer (No. 5) and sophomore Kiefer Von Lintel (No. 6) against Hayden while junior Kyler Knudtson and senior Aryamann Zutshi (No. 2) and Kramer and junior Zach Willingham (No. 3) took doubles victories.
Knudtson (No.1), Zutshi (No. 2), Luetje (No. 3), Von Lintel (No. 4), sophomore Drew Newbery (No. 5) and Willingham (No. 6) notched singles wins against Topeka High while Casebeer and Luetje won in the No. 1 doubles match, while Kramer and Willingham won at No. 2 and Von Lintel and Newbery at No. 3.
Against Junction City the Junior Blues got singles wins from Knudtson (No. 1), Zutshi (No. 2), Luetje (No. 3), Casebeer (No. 4), Von Lintel (No. 5) and Newbery (No. 6) while Luetje and Casebeer (No. 1), Von Lintel and Newbery (No. 2) and Kramer and Willingham (No. 3) all won their doubles matches.
Hedberg said he saw some things out of Saturday that the Junior Blues can build on moving forward.
"I've got four or five things we'll be talking about on Monday and trying to get better at,'' Hedberg said.

Senior Alex Sherer and junior Michael Sandstrom went undefeated on the day for runner-up Hayden with Sherer and Sandstrom both winning a pair of singles matches and a pair of doubles matches.while senior Jeff Moore won matches in both singles and doubles for Topeka High.
