To start the second half, the Ichabods kept the pedal down, outscoring the Jets (7-16, 3-14 MIAA) 12-2 to start the half and never looked back, leading by as many as 38 in the second half.

Michael Keegan and Tyler Nelson led the Ichabods with 21 points each. It was a career-high in points for Keegan and Andrew Orr finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points and adding 10 rebounds and five assists. Also in double figures were Jarmell Johnson with 16 points and Jaden Monday with 11.

WU women drop 74-62 road decision to Jets

The Washburn women's basketball team chipped away at a 12-point deficit to get within three late in the third quarter, but could get no closer as Newman pulled away and defeated the Ichabods, 74-62, on Wednesday evening.

The Ichabods (9-13 overall, 5-11 MIAA) scored the first basket of the game on a layup by Emma Chapman, but that was their only lead of the quarter as the Jets (7-15, 4-13) scored eight of the next 11 points to go up 8-5 midway through the quarter.

Washburn fought back with a 6-2 run to level the score at 13 with just over a minute left in the period, but the Ichabods committed a shooting foul just before time expired and the Jets hit both free throws to take a 15-13 advantage into the second.

Gabi Artis got things going in the second quarter with a 3-pointer to give the Ichabods their first lead since the very first bucket.

The teams took turns going back and forth and Washburn tied things up at 17 and 20 and held a 24-23 lead after Aubrey Dewey's successful layup after a steal with 5:18 to go in the half.

The Ichabod offense fell into a lull after that point, however, as the Jets went on an 11-2 run to finish off the quarter, capped off by a buzzer-beating layup, to head to the locker room in front, 34-26.

Newman finished the half seven of 12 from the field (58.3 percent) and three of seven from 3-point range while the Ichabods made five of 12 attempts from the floor and just one 3-pointer.

Natalia Figueroa buried a 3-pointer 15 seconds into the second half, but the Jets used a 7-0 to build a 41-29 lead with 6:55 on the clock.

With 3:30 left to go in the third, Dewey made one of two at the free throw line to start a 9-0 rally to pull within three, 45-42, at the 1:50 mark.

During that run, the Ichabod defense used full-court pressure to capture three steals. The 3-ball started to fall again for Newman as the Jets made two from deep in the midst of closing out the period on a 9-1 run to extend their lead to 53-44.

The Ichabods made it a seven-point difference twice early in the fourth quarter when the Jets started to pull away with a 9-2 run and led by double-digits for the remainder of the game. Between both teams, there was a combined 25 free throws taken in the fourth quarter with Washburn making seven of eight and Newman going 13 of 17.

Washburn finished the evening shooting exactly 40 percent from the field and Newman shot at a 44.9 clip. The Jets went nine for 24 from behind the 3-point line while the Ichabods made five of 13. At the free throw line, the Jets converted on 21 of 27 attempts and the Ichabods were 17 of 27 on foul shots. The Ichabods outrebounded the Jets, 33-28.

Eight of the nine Ichabods who played in the game scored at least two points and the Washburn bench accounted for exactly half of the 62 points.

Amaya Davison scored a career-high 15 points and made three of six shots from behind the arc.

Dewey finished with 12 points, four steals, four rebounds, and three assists. Macy Doebele rounded-out the double-digit scorers with 10 points and made six of eight attempts at the free throw line to go with five rebounds.

Britney Ho and Maddie Spagnola scored 14 points apiece to lead Newman.

The Ichabods will return home to close out the week, hosting Central Oklahoma on Saturday at 1 p.m.
