Sophomore Kaden Ballard came up with a steal and the game-winning basket at the buzzer to give Centennial League-leading Washburn Rural a 46-44 road victory at Junction City Tuesday night.
With the win Washburn Rural moved to 12-4 overall and 5-1 in the league while Junction City dropped to 10-6, 4-2.
Washburn Rural led 35-32 at the end of the third quarter and 23-20 at the half.
Senior Wyatt Conklin led the Junior Blues with 11 points while senior Jack Bachelor added nine points.
The Junior Blues have now won five straight games.
WASHBURN RURAL GIRLS 46, JUNCTION CITY 28 -- Washburn Rural protected its two-game lead in the Centennial League race with a 46-28 win at Junction City Tuesday night.
The Junior Blues improved to 11-4 overall and 6-0 in the league race.
Washburn Rural led by only a point, 23-22, at haltime before outscoring the Blue Jays 23-6 in the second half.
EMPORIA GIRLS 44, HAYDEN 32 -- Hayden was within six points (11-5) at the end of the opening quarter and eight points (25-17) at the half but Emporia opened up a 13-point cushion at the end of the third quarter on the way to a 44-32 Centennial League victory Tuesday at Hayden.
Emporia improved to 13-3 overall and 4-2 in the league with its third win of the season over the Wildcats while Hayden fell to 9-5 and 2-4, with the Spartans ending Hayden's five-game winning streak.
Junior Lauren Sandstrom led Hayden with a game-high 22 points.
EMPORIA BOYS 39, HAYDEN 38 -- Hayden was whistled for a foul with .3 on the clock and Cooper Rech hit one of two free throws to give Emporia the 39-28 Centennial League victory at Hayden.
Hayden (7-7, 2-4) led 21-16 at halftime and 30-26 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Senior Joe Otting led Hayden with 12 points while freshman Ayden McGibboney added 11 points for the Wildcats.
Parker Leeds scored 11 points to lead Emporia (11-5, 4-2).
The Spartans posted their third win of the season over the Wildcats, with all three games decided by seven or fewer points.
SEAMAN GIRLS 70, KANSAS CITY-TURNER 8 -- Top-ranked (Class 5A) Seaman improved to 14-1 overall and 10-1 in the United Kansas Conference with a 70-8 home romp over KC-Turner Tuesday night.
The Vikings, who won their eighth straight game, got 12 points from sophomore Kinley Wilhelm and freshman Maddie Gragg, while sophomore Maggie Moulden had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Sophomore Anna Becker had eight points, five rebounds and three assists while sophomore Jaida Stallbaumer had eight points as Seaman had 11 players crack the scoring column and shot 60 percent from the field.
SEAMAN BOYS 67, KANSAS CITY-TURNER 46 -- Seaman snapped a brief two-game losing streak with a 67-46 home United Kansas Conference romp past KC-Turner on Tuesday.
The Vikings, who improved to 8-7 overall and 5-6 in the UKC, led 24-15 at halftime and broke the game open with a 20-7 third quarter.
Senior Aron Davis, who had missed the Vikings' previous game with an ankle injury, scored 14 points in the third quarter on the way to a 26-point night.
HERITAGE CHRISTIAN BOYS 70, CAIR PARAVEL LATIN 44 -- Heritage Christian Academy opened up a 41-23 lead at the half on the way to a 70-40 Kaw Valley Conference victory over Cair Paravel.
The Lions fell to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in the Kaw Valley Conference while Heritage Christian improved to 12-4, 5-1.
HERITAGE CHRISTIAN 48, CAIR PARAVEL LATIN 21 -- Heritage Christian Academy built a 23-12 first-half advantage and then dominated the second half on the way to a 48-21 Kaw Valley Conference win.
Heritage Christian 11-3 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the Kaw Valley Conference while Cair Paravel fell to 4-12, 1-6.
ROSSVILLE GIRLS 66, OSAGE CITY 31 -- Rossville tuned up for Friday's War on 24 with Silver Lake with a 66-31 non-league rout over Osage City.
Rossville improved to 12-4 on the season while having four players crack double figures.
Junior Emma Mitchell led the Bulldawgs with 16 points while junior Kinsey Perine added 14 points and Rylee Dick and Kinley Porter 10 points apiece.
OSAGE CITY BOYS 64, ROSSVILLE 45 -- Osage City star Landon Boss scored 43 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the Indians rolled to a 64-45 non-league victory over Rossville.
The Bulldawgs fell to 6-10 on the season while Osage City improved to 13-4.
