Kansas basketball legend Ron Slaymaker and veteran soccer coach Tim Collins are part of a group of 12 new varsity head coaches who have been announced by Shawnee County high schools for the 2024-2025 school year.
Slaymaker, the former longtime Emporia State men's basketball coach who most recently coached girls basketball at Olpe after a seven-year stint with the Chase County girls, takes over as the girls coach at Topeka High.
Topeka High has also added former Augusta head coach Jason Filbeck as the Trojans' new football coach.
Collins, who coached a state championship team at Topeka West and also coached the women's team at Washburn University, will coach the Seaman boys soccer team this fall.
Collins is one of three new coaches for the Vikings, with Madison Lamond taking over as Seaman's new girls swimming coach and former softball assistant Daniel Ruda moving up to the head coaching position to replace Jay Monhollon, who retired at the end of the 2024 season.
Former McPherson state champ and Washburn University player Christian Ulsaker has been named the head boys basketball coach at Topeka West after a stint at Wabaunsee, replacing veteran Charger coach Rick Bloomquist who stepped down after the 2023-2024 season.
Former Topeka West assistant Dwayne Anthony has been named the head boys basketball coach at Hayden, taking over for Trey Brown, who resigned after one season with the Wildcats to take an assistant's position at his college alma mater, MidAmerica Nazarene.
Humbelina Harper will begin her first season as Hayden's boys and girls cross country coach, while former Cair Paravel girls basketball standout Jaley Barkley returns to her alma mater as the Lions' head coach
Jose Rosales Rivera has been named the new boys soccer coach at Highland Park while the Scots still have openings to fill in softball and girls wrestling.
Derek Dick is the new girls basketball coach at Rossville while Joe Zimmer will take over as the Bulldawgs' head track and field coach.
Shawnee Heights has not announced any coaching changes but the T-Birds will have at least one change, with longtime baseball coach Ryan Schmidt retiring after the conclusion of the 2024 season.
Hayden will also have a new coach in boys and girls track and field next spring while Topeka High still has an opening in girls wrestling and Washburn Rural has a vacancy in boys swimming and diving, the Junior Blues' lone coaching change.
Silver Lake is expected to return all of its head coaches from 2023-2024 for this school year.
