Hayden's girls basketball team bounced back from an 11-point loss last Friday at Seaman to take a 47-45 non-league road win at Tonganoxie Wednesday night.

The Wildcats, who improved to 8-8 on the season, limited Tonganoxie to just 4 points in the first quarter while opening up a 14-4 advantage and Hayden was in front 27-19 at the half and 36-31 at the start of the fourth quarter.

"We were really good defensively early on and that was the difference,'' Hayden coach Carvel Reynoldson said.

Junior Carly Stuke scored 16 points to lead the Wildcats while senior Rhen Calhoon added 7 points and freshmen Lauren Sandstrom and Reagan Huscher had 6 apiece.

Tonganoxie (5-11) did not have a player crack double figures, with senior Morgan Brusven leading the Chieftains with 9 points.

A couple of Manhattan runs proved to be the difference Wednesday night in the Indians' 44-35 home Centennial League victory over Seaman.

Manhattan, which gave veteran coach Scott Mall his 400th career win, took control with a 12-0 run in the second quarter and held off the Vikings with an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter after Seaman pulled within 3 points.

Manhattan led by just a point (10-9) at the end of the first quarter, but the Indians extended their advantage to 29-20 at the half and led 34-26 at the start of the fourth quarter.

"Our half-court defense was great besides that stretch in the second quarter," Seaman coach Matt Tinsley said. "We struggle to score at times and it's tough to come back when we spot a team. Then we are in catch-up mode and that's not our game."

Freshman Taylin Stallbaumer paced Seaman (6-10, 6-7) with 14 points while senior Reagan Kramer added 9 points and freshman Brooklyn Gormley 8.

Seaman did not score more than 11 points in a quarter and was held to 9 or fewer points in three quarters, including 6 in the third.

"Our offensive possessions at times seem like a magnitude of five when we struggle to score,'' Tinsley said. "We need a good shot every possession.''

Manhattan (8-8, 7-5) had five players with at least 6 points.
