Getting set to begin his second season on the Pittsburg State University football staff, former Topeka High standout Tyrell Everett got the 2023 campaign off to a good start with a preseason pomotion.

Everett, an All-City and Kansas Shrine Bowl pick for the Trojans, joined the Pitt State staff as defensive line coach in 2022. He will continue to coach the Gorillas' defensive linemen. "Tyrell is a very driven young coach and a passionate teacher of the game of football,'' Wright said in a Pitt State release. "Our players respond at a high level to his mentorship, and he will thrive in his additional duties for the Gorillas."

The Pitt State defense ranked second in the MIAA in quarterback sacks (31) in 2022 and defensive linemen Dubem Okonkwo (first team), Zeke Wall (second team) and Cole Sample (honorable mention) earned All-MIAA honors for the Gorillas under Everett's tutelage.

Pittsburg State won the MIAA championship and advanced to the second  round of the NCAA Division II playoffs last fall, posting an 12-1 overall record.

Everett came to Pitt State after previous coaching stops at Clarke University, Tulsa, Akron, West Florida and Butler Community College.

Everett played collegiately at Butler and Baker University.

Pitt State will open its 2023 season on Thursday, Aug. 31, against Washburn in Pittsburg.
