Senior Isiah Johnson returned with a bang for Shawnee Heights boys basketball team Thursday night in the McPherson Invitational, scoring a game-high 22 points as the T-Birds knocked off host McPherson in overtime, 60-54. 

Johnson, who had been sidelined for four games due to COVID-19, went 8 of 15 from the field with 3-pointers to lead the T-Birds, who improved to 4-3 on the season.

Nathan Pewe added 12 points and four steals for Shawnee Heights, while Harvey Davis had 11 points and Andrew Rantz contributed 8 points and 8 rebounds.

“The thing I was most pleased with was that we did things the right way,’’ Shawnee Heights coach Ken Darting said. “We did everything we needed to do to give ourselves a chance to win that game.’’

Shawnee Heights trailed 12-10 after the first quarter, but the T-Birds rallied for a 25-20 halftime advantage.

The 6-4 Bullpups used a 18-10 third quarter to take a 38-35 lead into the fourth quarter, but Heights forced the overtime with the game tied at 45-all and outscored McPherson 15-9 in the extra session.

Seth Madron scored 17 points and Jayton Alexander 13 for McPherson.

WICHITA HEIGHTS BOYS 61, SEAMAN 48

Wichita Heights improved to 7-3 with a 61-48 win over Seaman in the opening round of Valley Center's January Jam.

The Falcons had three players crack double figures against the Vikings, led by AJ Neal with 18 points and Dreylin Kemp with 11.

The Vikings will play host Valley Center at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Wichita Northwest at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Sophomore Kaeden Bonner scored a game-high 24 points, with 4 3-pointers, for Seaman.

BLUE VALLEY NORTHWEST GIRLS 47, SHAWNEE HEIGHTS 41

Shawnee Heights' girls (3-4) mounted a late-game comeback against Blue Valley Northwest, but the Huskies had already built a double-digit advantage over the first three quarters.

Northwest opened up a 30-18 halftime lead and went up 40-26 heading into the fourth quarter.

Seniors Adysen Burghart and Tatum Brown led Shawnee Heights with 10 and 8 points, respectively.
