Class 5A No. 1-ranked Seaman girls basketball needed only 60 minutes of real-world time to roll past Kansas City-Schlagle, 73-11, Tuesday night in the Vikes' highest scoring game of the season.

“We definitely want to be peeking by the end of the year and playing your best basketball. And we’re better when we share the ball, I thought we did that tonight, which is definitely a good sign heading into the sub-state championship,” said Seaman coach Matt Tinsley.

Seaman, 20-1, advanced to a Class 5A sub-state championship on Friday where it will play host to United Kansas Conference rival Piper, who the Vikings are 2-0 against on the year.

“After tonight we are 0-0, everybody is 0-0 again, it’s a one game season and we got to focus, just on little things. This time of year it just comes down to execution and making sure we are executing our alignment and our assignment regardless of who we play we know it’s going to be a good game,” Tinsley said.

Seaman’s season came to an end in the sub-state championship last season, something the team has thought about making sure wouldn’t happen this season since Day 1.

“The first day of practice is when we began the season with the end in mind. But there’s nothing to celebrate, we aren't there yet, we gotta go to work,” Tinsey said.

The Stallions of Schlage (1-16) got a bucket early, a layup by senior De’Janae Brown to make it a 3-2 game but the Vikings quickly imposed their will on the No. 16 seed.

Junior Taylin Stallbaumer scored the first seven points for Seaman and finished the quarter with 11.

Freshman Maddie Gragg had eight points in the opening quarter as the Vikings led 27-6 after just eight minutes.

Seaman’s offense worked even better in the second quarter, with eight Vikings entering the scoring column. After Taylin led the scoring charge in the first quarter, sophomore Jaida Stallbaumer picked right up with eight points in the second.

Schlagle was held to just 19 shot attempts in the game, largely because Seaman was consistently taking the ball from them and living in the Stallions' backcourt.

The Vikings scored 32 points in the second quarter, allowing only two and led 59-8 at halftime.

“In the first half we came out and played hard and got some girls with their heads up, (even then) we are still working on our timing,” Tinsley said.

Several starters from Seaman did not take the court in the second half, and the Vikings didn’t attempt a 3-pointer except for the end of the quarter. Junior Elinore Stallbaumer scored all four of Seaman’s points in the fourth quarter, making that three Stallbaumers to lead the team in scoring in separate quarters.

The rest of the fourth quarter was played out to make the game official, with Seaman claiming a 62 point victory, while tying its largest margin of victory in the 2022-23 season.

Ten players scored for the Vikes, led by Taylin Stallbaumer’s 13 points on 5-6 shooting. Gragg had 12 on 4-5 shooting from the floor and Anna Becker was in double figures with 10 points.

Brown’s five points led Schlagle.
