Washburn Rural junior Madeline Carter placed a city-high third among 91 girls runners in Saturday's Baldwin Invitational at the Baldwin City Golf Course, pacing a large city contingent.

Carter clocked a five-kilometer time of 18 minutes, 49.15 seconds in a race won by Mill Valley senior Katie Schwartzkopf in 18:23.31.

Three other city runners posted top-10 finishes in the girls race, with Seaman junior Bethany Druse finishing eighth (19:26.67) while Rural senior Khloi Bird (19:27.86) and freshman Payton Fink (19:28.84) placed ninth and 10th.

Seaman senior Emma Schultz (20:24.70) and Viking freshman Joslynn Grace (20:25.46) finished 28th and 29th while Seaman freshman Anna Becker was 35th (20:42.03), Topeka West senior Anna Phelps 38th (20:55.44) and Seaman freshman Stella Appelhanz 40th (21:01.66).

Washburn Rural (134) and Seaman (139) finished fifth and sixth among 11 schools in the team standings.

Shawnee Heights sophomore Jackson Esquibel and Washburn Rural senior Alex Holmes paced city runners in the 112-runner boys field, with Esqubel finishing seventh in 16:39.16 and Holmes taking eighth in 16:39.33.

Heights junior Kory Sutton finished just out of the top 10, taking 12th in 16:51.13.

Washburn Rural senior Spencer Haddock placed 16th (17:11.27) while Seaman was led by senior Jace Moore, who finished 24th (17:33.26)) and Rural sophomore Hayden Keller was 26th (17:36.95).

Junior Michael Christopher led Topeka High with a 39th-place finish (18:00.80) while senior Louis Wilson led Topeka West with a 63rd-place finish (18:38.27).

Rural placed a city-high fifth as a team 2ith 128 points.

NEWKIRK 5TH IN FIELD OF 283 IN IOWA

Hayden senior cross country star Tanner Newkirk finished fifth individually out of 283 competitors and was the top Kansan in Saturday's Heartland Cross Country Classic in Pella, Iowa.

Newkirk, the defending Class 4A state champion, clocked a five-kilometer time of 15 minutes, 48.6 seconds while Derek Leicht, a senior out of Dubuque Hemstead (Iowa), won the individual title in 15:37.3.

Hayden sophomore Aiden Amis finished 126th (17:47.9) while senior Ryan Rochford finished 131st (17:50.1) as Hayden finished 23 as a team in the 42-school field.

Freshman Elliot Wrench led Hayden's girls with a 146th-place finish among 226 runners in 22:19.7.
