Washburn Rural finished third in both the boys and girls divisions in Friday's Class 6A track and field regional at Wichita Northwest, posting seven victories and qualifying in a total of 17 events (nine girls, eight boys) for Thursday's state meet in Wichita.

Senior Marquel Russell led the Junior Blues with a sweep of the regional titles in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles while the Rural boys also got a win from Christian Ahlf in the pole vault.

Madeline Carter led a 1-2-3 finish for the Rural girls in the 800 meters, while Keely Wagner won the 1,600, Raegan Peterson the discus and the Junior Blues ended the meet with a win in the 4x400-meter relay.

Russell won the 110s in 14.87 seconds and came back to double up in the 300s in a time of 42.64 seconds, while Ahlf led three Rural state qualifiers in the pole vault with a win at 12-6. Joel Goering took second in the pole vault (11-6) and Michael Mercer third (11-0).

Carter won the girls 800 in 2 minutes, 27.62 seconds while Wagner (2:28.96) and Khloi Bird (2:29.67) finished second and third.

Wagner won the 1,600 in 5:38.95 while Petersen took the discus title at 121 feet, 10 inches and the Junior Blues won the 4x400 relay in 4:10.19.

Zsamar Sipple was a double individual qualifier for Rural, taking second in the triple jump (44-8.25) and third in the long jump (21-7.5) while Zach Sulzen-Watson also qualified in a pair of events, posting a runner-up showing in the discus (151-6) and taking fourth in the shot put (48-3.5).

Sam Shonka was the runner-up in the high jump, clearing 6-4.

Jada Ingram finished second in the high jump at 5-4 and was fourth in the 400 (61.71) while Elle Bray was second in the long jump (16-5.75), Lillian Zeigler placed third in the high jump (5-0) and Rebekah Smith was fourth in the shot put (34-10.5).

The Junior Blues also qualified for state in the 4x800 relay with a second-place finish (10:27.17).
