The No. 3-ranked Washburn Rural girls had trouble putting Manhattan away Friday night, but used a 13-4 third quarter to open up some breathing room in a 52-38 Centennial League
road win.
The Junior Blues, who improved to 15-2 overall and 12-2 in the league, trailed 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, but took a 23-20 lead at the half and boosted their margin to 36-24 by the end of the third quarter.
Rural finished off the win with a 16-14 scoring edge down the stretch, getting 17 points from sophomore Brooklyn DeLeye and 10 points and a pair of 3-pointers from junior Ella Hurtig.
Manhattan (7-9, 6-6) got a game-high 19 points from sophomore Avery Larson, who was the Indians' only player with more than 5 points.
WASHBURN RURAL BOYS 59, MANHATTAN 53
The Junior Blues put together one of their most balanced offensive attack of the season in Friday night's 59-53 Centennial League road win at Manhattan, with five Rural players scoring at least 8 points.
Sophomore Jack Bachelor paced the Junior Blues with 14 points while seniors Josh Williams and Joe Berry added 13 and 12 points as Rural improved to 11-6 overall and 10-4 in the league. Seniors Jack Hutchinson and Davan Brady had 8 apiece for Rural.
Rural trailed 18-17 at the end of the first quarter and led 35-31 at the half before opening up a 51-42 advantage entering the fourth quarter. The Indians held an 11-8 scoring edge down the stretch but could not overtake the Junior Blues.
Sophomore Cameron Carr led Manhattan (8-9, 6-8) with a game-high 16 points while junior Tate Brown added 14 points and senior Owen Braxmeyer 10.
TOPEKA HIGH GIRLS 73, HAYDEN 38
Top-ranked Topeka High (Class 6A) pushed its record to 17-0 overall and 14-0 in the Centennial League with its 40th straight win, 73-38 over Hayden at Topeka High.
The Trojans built a 34-22 halftime lead over the Wildcats (8-9, 6-7) and then turned the game into the rout with a 29-6 third quarter onslaught, taking a 63-28 advantage to force a running clock in the fourth.
Junior NiJaree Canady scored 19 points to lead the Trojans, who also got 18 points from sophomore Kiki Smith and 10 from senior Jae'Mya Lyons.
Senior Rhen Calhoon scored a game-high 23 points for Hayden, including a 14 of 16 performance at the free throw line, while junior Carly Stuke added 8 points.
TOPEKA HIGH BOYS 45, HAYDEN 38
Topeka High picked up its third win of the season while avenging an earlier loss to Hayden, taking control down the stretch for a 45-38 Centennial League decision at High.
The Trojans (3-14, 3-11), who went 2-1 against the Wildcats on the season, led 37-24 at the start of the fourth quarter and fought off Hayden down the stretch for the win as seniors Isiah Esquibel, Jalen Smith and Jayden Leesman combined for 39 points.
Esquibel and Smith scored 14 points apiece for the Trojans while Leesman added 11 points.
Senior Vacario Triplett paced Hayden (4-12, 3-10) with 14 points to tie Esquibel and Smith for game-high scoring honors while sophomore Joe Otting added 10 points, with a pair of 3-pointers.
