Washburn Rural was the heavy favorite going into Thursday's city swimming and diving championships and did not disappoint.

The Junior Blues cruised to their second straight title, taking a decisive win over runner-up Hayden by a margin of 402.5-292.5.

Rural and Seaman have had a longstanding rivalry in the city meet, but other than diver Patrick Biggs, the Vikings were able to compete Thursday due to COVID-related issues.

“I have a lot of good friends on the Seaman team so I was disappointed I wasn’t going to get to race them today,” Washburn Rural junior standout Dagen Clouse said. “They just got unlucky.”

“We missed having some of that competition,” Rural junior Nathen Trachta said.

Trachta and Clouse led the way for Rural, winning both of their individual events while also swimming on a pair of winning relays to pick up four golds on the day as the Junior Blues won 9 of 12 events.

Trachta took first in 100-yard butterfly (54.57 seconds) and 100-yard backstroke (56.16), while Clouse edged out teammate Keats Larson to win the 50-yard freestyle (22.22) and 100-yard freestyle (50.52).

Also earning individual wins for Rural were Yeager Larson in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.78), Cordell Dimick in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.59) and Marquel Russell, who scored 228.10 in the diving competition.

Trachta, Y. Larson, K. Larson and Clouse took the gold in both the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.98) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:29.43) for the Junior Blues as well.

Luke Perkins was able to sweep his individual events for Shawnee Heights, taking first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:04.48) and 500-yard freestyle (5:07.88). Perkins joined teammates Caleb Deters, Jacob Dressler and Tanner Zerger as champions of the 200-yard medley relay (1:54.03).

Hudson Ramirez was the top performer for the runner-up Hayden Wildcats, earning second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.16 and third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:23.09).
