Washburn Rural's girls swimming team rolled up 522 points to take a decisive victory in Thursday's 12-school Topeka High Invitational at the Capitol Federal Natatorium.

The Junior Blues took the team title by a 220-point margin over runnerup Olathe South while Seaman was third with 270 points and Shawnee Heights fourth with 223 points.

Washburn Rural picked up individual victories from Mara Bare in the 200-yard freestyle (2 minutes, 03.58 seconds), Makenna Pritchard in the 50 free (25.19) and Audrey Appuhn in the 500 freestyle (5:23.57) and posted top-three finishes in nine of 12 events on the day.

Seaman got wins from Avery Walz in the 200 individual medley (2:10.65) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.45) while the foursome of A. Walz, Megan Strobel, Joslynn Grace and Tauren Walz won the 200 free relay (1:48.59).

Topeka High's Brianna Delvin won the one-meter diving title with a score of 233.10.

Topeka West soccer tops Highland Park 5-0 for first win

Topeka West girls soccer picked up its first victory of the season Thursday at Hummer Sports Park, rolling to a 5-0 non-league decision over USD 501 district rival Highland Park.

West, which improved to 1-2, led 1-0 at the half on a goal from junior Allyson Glenn before breaking open the game with second-half goals from senior Ela Martinez, freshman Taryn Gilbert, senior Aaliyah Smith and sophomore Abigail Ray.

Gilbert also was credited with an assist for Topeka West.

Senior Madison Gill picked up the shutout in goal for the Chargers.

Topeka West is scheduled to travel to Pittsburg for a non-league game on Friday.

Washburn Rural soccer bounces back with 2-0 win

After suffering its first loss of the season in a 2-0 loss to Blue Valley Southwest in Tuesday's opening round of the Olathe Northwest tournament, Washburn Rural soccer bounced back with a 2-0 tournament win over Kapaun Mt. Carmel Thursday night.

The Junior Blues, now 3-1-0, beat Kapaun for the second time this season after taking a 1-0 decision over the Crusaders in Rural's second game of the season.

Washburn Rural got goals from sophomores Kate Hinck and Delaney Hill.

Senior Mackinly Rohn and junior Hayley Legg were credited with assists while senior Hailey Beck picked up the shutout in goal.

Washburn Rural will close out its tournament appearance with a 12 p.m. game on Saturday against Shawnee Mission West.

Silver Lake softball blanks Kaws in twinbill sweep

Silver Lake opened its 2023 softball season with a pair of shutout victories on the road at Perry-Lecompton Thursday.

The Eagles posted a 7-0 win in the first game before taking a 10-0 six-inning victory in the nightcap.

Junior Avery Wende pitched a complete game in the opener, allowing six hits while striking out seven.

Sophomore Taylor Zordel had three first-game hits for the Eagles while junior Makenzie McDaniel knocked in two runs.

Silver Lake scored the only runs it would need with two runs in the top of the second and added a run in the third, three in the fourth and a run in the seventh.

The Eagles scored 10 runs on 13 hits in the second game on the way to the run-rule win.

Silver Lake scored single runs in its first two at-bats and then closed out the win with five runs in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Sophomore Kendra Cook threw a five-hitter in the second game while striking out four batters.

Freshman Kailyn Hanni had three hits for Silver Lake while Zordel and junior McKinley Kruger had two hits apiece.

Zordel, Cook and McDaniel all had two RBIs for the Eagles.

Rossville softball improves to 4-0 with routs over Santa Fe Trail

Rossville's softball team rolled to 9-1 and 12-2 wins over Santa Fe Trail in a rematch of last season's third place game in the Class 3A state tournament.

Santa Fe Trail took a 2-1, 11-inning win over Rossville in last year's third-place game but Rossville took decisive victories in both ends of Thursday's twinbill, improving to 4-0 on the year.
