Sophomore Lailah Benz scored a three-goal hat trick Tuesday night as Shawnee Heights' girls soccer team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 5-0 non-league win at the Bettis Family Sports Complex.

Shawnee Heights posted its second straight shutout win after blanking Kansas City-Harmon 10-0 last Thursday.

Benz scored the T-Birds' first two goals against the Cyclones and also scored Shawnee Heights' final goal of the night.

Shawnee Heights also got goals from seniors Peyton Hack andd Lily Martin while freshman Mackenzie Mertel registered the shutout in goal.

Heights will open United Kansas Conference play next Tuesday at KC-Turner.

T-Bird swim team second in Topeka High Invitational

Shawnee Heights finished second to Manhattan by a 589-373 margin in Tuesday's Topeka High Invitational swimming and diving meet at the Capitol Federal Natatorium.

The T-Birds posted their lone win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with the team of Amelia Ostazewsha, Isabelle Gomez, Angela Fernandez and Ashtynn Landry clocking a time of 4 minutes, 20.28.

Landry also finished second in the 50 freestyle (27.35) and the 100 free (59.21) while Ostazewsha was second in the 200 free (2:20.67) while Fernandez placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:47.07) and the team Ostazewsha, Gomez, Fernandez and Landy were second in the 200 free relay (1:57.95).

Topeka High finished fourth as a team, led by one-meter diving champion Brianna Devlin, who posted a winning score of 240.75.

High's Hara Del Castillo placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:09.95) and the 100 backstroke (1:07.59).

Rossville opens softball season with sweep

Rossville's softball team, which finished fourth in the Class 3A state tournament a year ago, opened its 2023 season with a pair of wins over Jefferson West.

The Bulldawgs took an 8-2 decision in the first game and edged the Tigers in the second game, 9-6.

Rossville will host Chapman on Thursday.

Southwest soccer blanks Washburn Rural, 2-0

Blue Valley Southwest handed Washburn Rural soccer its first loss of the season in Tuesday's opening round of the Olathe Northwest tournament, with Southwest taking a 2-0 win.

Washburn Rural, now 2-1 will return to tournament action at 7 p.m. Thursday against Kapaun Mt. Carmel.

The Junior Blues took a 1-0 decision over the Crusaders in their second game of the season.
