A quick turnaround seemed to be just what Topeka High’s boys basketball team needed.

After letting a second-half lead get away in a 62-59 loss at Junction City Thursday night, the Trojans got another shot at the Blue Jays Friday night at Topeka High and delivered a decisive 62-45 Centennial League victory, the Trojans’ second win of the season. 

Topeka High trailed 20-15 at the end of the first quarter in Friday night’s game, but the Trojans used a 16-7 second quarter to build a 31-27 halftime advantage and then dominated the second half by a 31-18 margin.

Senior Jayden Leesman led the way for Topeka High with a game-high 23 points, while freshman BJ Canady added 14, senior Isiah Esquibel 13 and senior Jalen Smith 9 points as the Trojans improved to 2-9 overall and 2-6 in the league.

Junior Seth Clark led Junction City (6-6, 4-5) with 22 points.

Smith had 19 points against Junction City in Thursday’s loss while Esquibel had 18.

BALDWIN GIRLS 62, HAYDEN 52

Baldwin outscored Hayden 19-7 in the fourth quarter to take a 62-52 win in Saturday’s fifth-place game of the Wellsville Top Gun Invitational.

Senior Rhen Calhoon scored 19 points to pace Hayden (6-6) while junior Carly Stuke added 17 points. 

Merrin Frost led Baldwin (7-5) with 16 points, while Riley Smith added 13 and Alyssa Reichard 12. 

GREAT BEND GIRLS 49, SHAWNEE HEIGHTS 46

Shawnee Heights girls fell behind Great Bend early in Saturday's game, trailing 16-8 at the end of the first quarter, and the T-Birds’ comeback came up just short, with Heights dropping a 49-46 decision at Heights.

Senior Adysen Burghart scored 19 points to lead Shawnee Heights (3-7), including a 10 of 11 performance at the free throw line, while senior Tatum Brown added 12 points.

SHAWNEE MISSION NORTH 40, SEAMAN 34

Shawnee Mission North picked up its first victory of the season, going 9 of 12 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter to top Seaman on Saturday, 40-34.

Seaman fell to 3-6 with its third straight loss. Senior JahnAsia Anderson led Seaman with eight points, going 8 of 10 at the free throw line.
