EASTON BROXTERMAN, Washburn Rural
A returning Class 6A state wrestling champion, Broxterman helped lead Washburn Rural to the boys Centennial League championship on Saturday at Manhattan with a perfect 4-0 team record in dual competition. A junior, Broxterman went 4-0 individually with four pins between 29 and 33 seconds, winning the award for most pins in the least amount of time.

PEARMELLA CARTER, Highland Park
Carter, a freshman girls basketball standout, scored 38 points and grabbed 18 points in Friday's 66-30 Meadowlark Conference victory over Kansas City-Wyandotte. Carter went 18 of 27 shots from the floor and two of three from the free throw line while also recording six steals. Earlier in the week Carter scored 22 points with 21 rebounds in a 63-34 conference win over KC-Washington.

LAIKEN CLARK, Washburn Rural
A senior wrestling standout, Clark captured the 135-pound Centennial League championship Saturday at Manhattan, helping Washburn Rural win its fourth straight league team title with a perfect 4-0 record in dual competition. Clark reached the 100-win milestone in her first match and went 4-0 on the day with 32-second and 1 minute, 6-second pins as well as an 11-3 major decision and a forfeit victory.

Washburn Rural's boys and girls wrestling teams went undefeated on the day Saturday at Manhattan, earning the 2024 league championships.

The league tournament consisted of duals against the other four league schools competing in the tournament and both Rural teams went 4-0 in the event.
Washburn Rural's boys, ranked No. 2 in Class 6A by the Kansas Wrestling Coaching Association, defeated Emporia (63-18), Topeka High (75-6), Junction City (54-21) and top-ranked Manhattan (36-33) while the No. 9 Junior Blues took girls wins over Emporia (58-24), Topeka High (75-6), No. 7-ranked Junction City (54-24) and No. 5-ranked Manhattan (61-18).

Shawnee Heights' girls wrestling team entered Saturday's United Kansas Conference Championships as the four-time defending conference champion and the No. 4-ranked team in Class 6A-5A by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association.
But Heights coach Chad Parks knew the T-Birds couldn't afford to take anything for granted and would need to be on top of their game to stretch their title reign to five straight seasons.

The T-Birds were up to the task and then some, earning five individual championships and adding three runnerup finishes on their home mats on the way to a 217-179.5 victory over Basehor-Linwood, while short-handed Seaman finished third (129).
"We knew Basehor was going to be really tough,'' Parks said. "They're solid all the way through and when you wrestle a team that's solid all the way through they're going to give you a run. That's all there is to it.
"We needed to come out like always and just focus on doing our job one match at a time and then see how it plays out. I felt we wrestled really well. The girls stayed focused, they worked hard. We were out there battling every match and that's all we ask of them.''
