A year after having its decade-long city championship run ended by Hayden, Washburn Rural was back in its familiar spot on Monday at Western Hills as seniors Natalie Peterson and Reece Randall posted a one-two individual finish to lead the Junior Blues to an 10-stroke team victory over the Wildcats in the city event.

"It was definitely a goal that we had set before the season started,'' Rural coach Jared Goehring said of Monday's city title. "The girls had a little bit of a sour taste left in their mouth after last year and I thought they stepped up and performed well today, especially there towards the top with Natalie and Reece leading us.''

For the first time in her career Peterson led Washburn Rural in Monday's event, taking medalist honors with a 77 while Randall was a stroke back in second place.
"I just tried to stay on a par streak and didn't really focus on if I had a bad hole or not,'' Peterson said. "It just makes me feel comfortable to be myself and try my best.''
Washburn Rural also got a tie for sixth from sophomore Kailyn Petersen (84) and an eighth-place finish from junior Lauren Cox (87) to round out the Junior Blues' top four.
Goehring is hopeful that the city title was the start of a strong late-season push for the Junior Blues.
"We definitely have the potential,'' Goehring said. "Any of our six girls can go low for us. We've seen two career rounds by two different players (Peterson and Randall) this year on our roster so we kind of have the mentality that we want to continue to build our depth going into (Centennial) League next week, going into the Lawrence invite at Eagle Bend and then towards the end of year at Stagg Hills in regionals.''

Hayden senior Addyson Baer posted a third-place with an 80 to lead the Wildcats while junior Izzy Glotzbach carded an 81 to place fourth and junior Lauren Borjon tied for sixth with an 84.
Seaman finished third in the team standings with a score of 389, led by junior Makenna Stuke, who tied Topeka West senior Alex Baxter for eighth place with an 88.
Seaman senior Jaycee Zimmerman finished 10th in the city tourney with an 89.
Actually, Washburn Rural and Peterson won a pair of titles on Monday, with the Junior Blues winning the championship in the Topeka West Invitational, which was held in conjunction with the city meet, and Peterson taking individual honors.
Emporia junior Elise Eckert was top non-city finisher in the West Invitational, placing fifth with an 82.
Seaman, Shawnee Heights and Topeka West will be right back in action on Tuesday, competing in the United Kansas Conference tournament at Lake Shawnee.
The Centennial League tournament will be held next Monday at Shawnee Country Club.

Washburn University soccer played its first draw of the season Sunday morning against Western Colorado, with the two teams battling to an 0-0 deadlock in Kearney, Neb.

From the start of the match Washburn (3-2-1) controlled possession and it resulted in shots. The Ichabods created 12 shot attempts in the first half while holding the Mountaineers (1-4-1) to just one attempt.
Still, the score remained the same after 45 minutes of action.
It was more of the same in the second half, with Washburn creating 10 more shot attempts, including six in the first 15 minutes after the break.
The Ichabods put pressure on the Western Colorado defense in multiple ways as they earned 13 corner kicks while preventing the Mountaineers from attempting any.
The 22nd and final shot of the match for the Ichabods came in the 89th minute while the score remained 0-0, which is how it stayed until time expired.
Former Washburn Rural standout Hailey Beck earned her third solo shutout of the season while making two saves. Washburn shut out its opponent for the fourth straight match.

MADELINE DETERS, Topeka High
A junior tennis standout, Deters won the No. 1 singles championship in last Wednesday's Topeka High Invitational at Kossover Tennis Center. Deters posted a perfect 4-0 record in the tournament, capped by a 6-3, 6-1 win over Olathe East's Mia Huttenmueller in the title match. Deters improved to 14-2 on the season.

Finley, a senior wide receiver, caught four touchdown passes from Max Huston in Friday's weather-shortened 53-6 United Kansas Conference win over Topeka West. Finley scored on pass receptions of 53, 18, 65 and 34 yards in the win over Topeka West, helping the Vikings improve to 2-1 on the season.

CAMDEN GRANADO, Shawnee Heights
A junior soccer and football player, Granado scored a pair of goals to help Shawnee Heights pick up its first soccer win of the season last Tuesday, a 4-2 United Kansas Conference win over De Soto, and he contributed an assist in Thursday's 4-2 UKC win over Piper. The T-Birds' placekicker, Granado went five of five on extra points in Friday's 42-35 loss to Basehor-Linwood.

For the second straight week the Washburn University football team took a top-10 team down to the wire with a chance to tie the game on its final drive of the contest, but the Ichabods came up short in a 39-31 MIAA decision to No. 10 Pittsburg State Saturday at Yager Stadium.
"We played unbelievably hard,'' Washburn coach Craig Schurig said. "I'm very proud of our guys. That's as hard as I've seen our team play in a long time.''

Washburn, now 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA, battled back from a 16-point deficit 5:18 into the game to briefly take a 28-26 third-quarter advantage and drove deep into Gorillas territory late in the contest with an opportunity to force overtime before turning the ball over on downs.
"We couldn't have started any worse,'' Schurig said. "Everything that could go wrong did go wrong and credit to Pitt for being aggressive, but then our guys bounced back and played their rearends off. It was a great effort by our guys.''
The Ichabods were hurt by 113 yards in penalties, including having a potential go-ahead touchdown from Tre Richardson wiped out and a costly personal foul late in the game, and WU was also stung by an over-ruled call that would have given the hosts the ball after a fourth-down defensive stop.
"Unbelievable,'' Schurig said of WU's defensive effort. "They stuffed the run and gave us every opportunity and stuffed them on fourth down and we would have had the ball at the 50-yard-line. They played hard and I'm proud of them.''
The game opened in wild fashion as 37 points were scored between the two teams in the first quarter, with 30 points coming in the first 5:18 of the game.
After the Ichabods fumbled the opening kickoff, the Gorillas (3-1, 2-1 MIAA) scored three plays later to take a 7-0 lead on a pass from Chad Dodson, Jr. to Jack Roberts for a 17-yard connection.
The Gorillas tried an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, but Shawnee Heights product Tyce Brown, a senior, picked it up and ran 47 yards for a touchdown, tying the score at 7-7 with 13:29 to play in the first quarter.
Pittsburg State went up 14-7 when Dodson threw his second touchdown pass of the day on a 78-yard reception by Christian Carter and the Gorillas made it a 16-7 game when they blocked a Washburn punt through the back of the end zone for a safety.
On the free kick from the Ichabods, Pittsburg State added another score when Jaylen Fuksa returned the kickoff 85 yards for a score to put the Gorillas up 23-7 with 9:42 to play in the first quarter.

Neither team scored again until the Ichabods cut the lead to 23-14 when redshirt freshman quarterback Keller Hurla hit Highland Park product Richardson for a 60-yard touchdown pass.
The Gorillas stretched the lead to 26-14 on a 31-yard field goal by Hayden Koscicki with 9:43 to play in the opening half but Washburn scored another special teams TD when Dodson pooch punted from the Ichabod 38 and Jacquez White returned it for a 92-yard score, trimming the Ichabod deficit to 26-21 with 6:20 left in the half.

Highland Park pushed its consecutive game shutout streak to three games on Friday, with the Scots improving to 3-0 overall and in the Meadowlark Conference with a 32-0 road win over Kansas City-Schlagle.

Highland Park has now outscored its three Meadowlark Conference opponents by a 126-0 margin, with Friday's game its closest outcome of the season.
Scot senior Jamon Wilson continued his red hot start to the 2024 season with a pair of touchdowns, including an 80-yard kickoff return to open the second half.
Highland Park will be back at Hummer Sports Park on Friday for a Meadowlark Conference game against KC-Harmon, which is 1-2 on the season.

TOPEKA HIGH 26, WICHITA SOUTHEAST 0 -- Topeka High improved to a perfect 3-0 on the season with Friday's weather-shortened 26-0 non-league road win over Wichita Southeast.
The Trojans have now posted three straight wins over members of the Wichita City League.
Topeka High led 13-0 when the game was delayed for approximately an hour due to lightning.
High then added to its advantage with a 45-yard TD pass from Zane Smith to Saron Carter and led 26-0 at the half when the game was called due to the inclement weather conditions in the area.
Carter led the Trojans' attack with three TDs on the night.
Topeka High will open Centennial League play next Friday at Emporia's Welch Stadium.

SILVER LAKE 18, PERRY-LECOMPTON 12 -- Silver Lake bounced back from its loss to two-time defending Class 2A state champion Nemaha Central with Friday's 18-12 road win over Perry-Lecompton.
Junior Dayne Johnson had a big night for the 2-1 Eagles, catching a pair of touchdown passes from senior quarterback Dysen Schooler.
Silver Lake held a 7-6 lead at the half and led 15-12 at the start of the fourth quarter before adding a field goal in the fourth quarter.
The Eagles will be back on the road Friday to face Big East League foe St. Marys.
