In some ways, the 2021 football season is one Washburn University junior linebacker Grant Bruner would love to forget.
In other ways, it's a year he'll cherish forever.
A nagging hamstring injury forced the 6-foot, 220-pound Bruner to spend a big chunk of the season on the sidelines, but the Gretna, Neb. native has bounced back to provide a defensive spark for the 8-2 Ichabods, who will take a five-game winning streak into Saturday's 1 p.m. Senior Day contest against Missouri Southern at Yager Stadium.
"This has probably been the toughest year sports-wise I've had in my life,'' said Bruner, who led the Ichabods with 73 in tackles in 2019 before the 2020 season was wiped out by COVID-19. "Coming into the season I had such high expectations for myself personally, and obviously the team, and then I think it was the fourth day of fall camp is when I got hurt and then it was one of those things that just kept lingering.''
Intent on returning to action as soon as he could, Bruner aggravated his injury in his first action of the season and is just now feeling close to 100 percent physically.
"It was just so frustrating because if it's anything besides a hamstring you can usually wrap it up and play, but the hamstring you've got to have it to run and I just wasn't able to go,'' said Bruner, who received All-MIAA honorable mention in '19. "The most frustrating part was physically you think you feel fine and you're ready to go and then you're not as good as you thought.''
The good news for Bruner and the Ichabods is that now he is finally able to flash the form that was expected out of him at the start of the fall.
"This last game was the best I've felt all year, I had no pain or anything,'' he said.
Bruner, who now has 39 total tackles in five games (20 solo), has been in on at least six tackles over the past three games and is coming off the best game of his career in last Saturday's 28-26 win at Pittsburg, registering 20 tackles, with 10 solo stops.
"I think even back in high school the most I had was upper teens,'' Bruner said. "They said after the game I had 20 tackles and I was like, 'Oh boy.' ''
And the game itself, which went down to the wire, is also one Bruner will never forget.
"I was telling people after the game, 'That was the most fun I've ever had playing football,' just being out there in a close game and the different swing of emotions that there was for both sides from penalties to big returns to turnovers.'' Bruner said. " It was just up and down and it was a blast. The most fun I ever had.''

It's hard to comprehend some of the numbers that senior quarterback Carter Brian and the Cair Paravel Latin football team have put up this season.
Cair Paravel has outscored its opposition by a 560-78 margin and not had a game closer than 42 points en route to a perfect 10-0 season, while Brian has ranked among the nation's best Eight-Man passers, throwing for 2,179 yards and 48 touchdowns.
But while the Lions' incredible season might be a surprise to those outside the Cair Paravel program, Brian said it's not a big shock to his team.
"We worked hard all summer,'' Brian said. "We played 7 on 7, we were lifting and doing all the things we needed to do and we knew that it was possible for us to be undefeated and when it came to game time, we just executed.''
Now the goal is to cap off the dream season with a win in Saturday's 1 p.m. Kansas Christian Athletic Association title game against perennial KCAA power St. Mary's Academy at Highland Park.
The Lions handed the Crusaders their only loss of the season in a 54-8 home regular-season victory in Week 5, a win that Brian said was a big momentum-builder.
"That was definitely a big statement game,'' Brian said. "I think it proved to us we were better than we thought we were and that we could hang with any team.''
But Brian said the Lions also know things will be tougher the second time around.

The Ichabods were ranked No. 8 in this fall's preseason poll.
The MIAA continues to be well-represented in the nationall poll as Central Missouri checks in at No. 4, Northwest Missouri is No. 5, and Nebraska-Kearney is No. 12.
The second edition of the NCAA regional rankings were released on Wednesday, with Washburn moving up one place to No. 3 on the list. Eight of the top-10 teams in the final Central Region rankings will advance to the NCAA Tournament.

The nationally-ranked Washburn University men's basketball team, coming off an MIAA Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance last season, will open its 2021-22 season at 12:45 p.m. Friday against Northern State in the first day of the Central Regional Challenge at historic Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.
Brett Ballard's Ichabods, who went 20-7 a year ago and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, open the season ranked No. 11 in the NABC and No. 17 in D2/SIDA.
Friday's opener will be the first of back-to-back games for Washburn, which will play Augustana at 6 p.m. Saturday.
For the most part Ballard, who is 82-38 in four seasons at WU, said he has been pleased with his team's work in preseason, but said the bar is set very high after last season's success.
"Overall I've been pleased,'' said Ballard, whose Ichabods were picked second in both the MIAA Coaches and Media preseason polls. "I think our veteran guys have done a good job of picking up where we left off last year and as far as the intensity and energy level our practices overall have been pretty good.
"I would say though that we've still got to be much more consistent with our discipline and our attention to detail and our focus. On a daily basis I think we can still take some big steps from that point. I would say I've been pleased, but these guys will tell you, I've been on them. We still aren't anywhere near where we need to be.''
The Ichabods return 85 percent of their scoring, 67 percent of their rebounding, 84 percent of their field goals, 93 percent of their 3-pointers, 83 percent of their free throws and 89 percent of their minutes played from a season ago.
Washburn is led by by senior guard Tyler Geiman, who was a third-team D2CCA All-American and first-team All-MIAA after averaging 20.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 6.0 assists while starting all 27 contests.
The Ichabods also return honorable mention All-MIAA selection and MIAA Tournament Most Valuable Player Jalen Lewis, who averaged 13.4 points.
Jonny Clausing was an honorable mention All-MIAA pick after scoring 9.6 points and 4.6 rebounds while shooting 61 percent last season, but Clausing is expected to be sidelined early in the season while recovering from a foot injury.
Tyler Nelson averaged 11.0 points and 1.6 steals per game a year ago while former Hayden standout Levi Braun averaged 6.6 points and hit 54 3-pointers. Connor Deffebaugh averaged 5.6 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game last season while Rathen Carter averaged 4.4 points and 2.4 rebounds.
"We'll have a pretty big target on our back because of the success we've had and we're going to get a lot of people's best shot so we're going to have to be ready to play every night and just because you had success in the past doesn't mean it's just guaranteed. You have to earn it.
"We've got to stay hungry and we've got to stay humble.''
Northern State enters Friday's game with a 1-1 record after falling to No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri 68-55 in St. Joseph, Mo. before topping Rockhurst 77-59 on Nov. 7.
The Wolves are ranked No. 15 in the NABC Preseason Coaches poll and received votes in the D2SIDA poll. Jordan Belka leads the Wolves in scoring at 19.5 points per game while Sam Masten is averaging 13.5 points and Jacksen Moni 11.5.
Augustana will open its season on Friday against Southern Arkansas at 6 p.m. in Kansas City.
