Seaman's volleyball team has known for awhile that it was going to be without coach Tatiana Dowling for a portion of Saturday's Seaman Invitational, with Dowling leaving after the Vikings' first two pool play matchess to fulfill her commitment to be part of a close friend's wedding.

"She told us at the beginning of the season because she wanted to let us know in advance so we could prepare for that, and that's something we've been preparing for all week,'' Seaman senior libero Laynee Brown said. "We've had our assistants (Aubree Taylor and Paul Muzzy) come up and coach us and they basically ran our practices to help us prepare for today.''
And Brown said the Vikings have all been trained to do what they needed to do.
"We all know our part annd where we stand and what we should do,'' Brown said. "I think we did really good. We really pulled together and played together as a team instead of being individuals on the court.''

Shawnee Heights' defensive clinic and Allen Baughman’s 279-yard performance on the ground led to a 27-0 shutout win over powerhouse Basehor Linwood Friday night at Wetter Field.
The complete team effort from the Thunderbirds on Friday night stunned the Bobcats of Basehor-Linwood and Shawnee Heights didn’t hand the Bobcats its first regular season loss since September 25th, 2020 by accident.
Every aspect of the game was controlled by the dominance of Shawnee Heights.
T-Bird junior running back Baughman had a career-defining night in front of the home faithful.
Baughman carried the ball 28 times for 279 yards and found the end zone three times as Shawnee Heights’ offensive line cleared the way with wide open alleys for Baughman all night long.
Baughman punished Bobcat defenders for a full 48 minutes. Through four games, Baughman has rushed for 776 yards and has found the end zone 10 times.
“Our offensive line’s pride that they carry in themselves and this brotherhood is truly amazing,” Shawnee Heights coach Jason Swift said. “There are not very many teams that carry that much unity within the offensive line. Our offensive line's blocking for a great running back. Allen’s a phenomenal running back who runs hard and punishes people.”
It’s no secret that Shawnee Heights’ defense has been stellar lately. The Thunderbirds have allowed just seven points in the last eight quarters.
The T-Birds stopped Basehor-Linwood on fourth down in the red zone twice. Shawnee Heights pressured the quarterback all night long, forcing three interceptions and disrupting any rhythm that the Bobcats were trying to create. The run defense was just as terrific.
“The Legion of Thunder stepped up tonight,” Swift said. “Basehor drove the ball and moved the ball, but our defense was able to not allow any points. Our defense gave us plenty of breathing room which allowed our offense to operate. Just a phenomenal night for our defense.”

Even though Topeka High had been outsscored 164-14 over its first three games, the Trojans felt like they had been making progress.
That progress paid dividends Friday night, with the Trojans taking a 34-21 Homecoming victory over Centennial League rival Emporia at Hummer Sports Park.
"We've grown a lot,'' said Topeka High junior standout Isaiah Kincade, who rushed for 104 yards on 15 carries and caught eight passes for 84 yards. "It seemed really rough but we always had to bounce back, we always had the next team to worry about and I think we were still able to improve.
"We were most definitely making progress. At first it seemed a little slow because those losses were hard but you learn from it and you press forward.''
The Trojans never trailed after jumping out to a 7-0 lead with 9:29 left in the first half on a 26-yard pass from senior quarterback Peyton Wheat to senior Elijah Kincade (Jaziah Mack kick).
The TD pass was part of a big night for Wheat, who passed for 216 yards on a 17 of 25 performance (one interception) and ran for 77 yards on 10 attempts, including a 25-yard touchdown.
"Our offensive line really stepped up, they showed growth,'' Wheat said. "Our receivers stepped up and I think as a team we got better and we came out and did the little things.
"We obviously had some mistakes that we can't continue to do but we've just got to go back to practice and take it day by day and continue to get better.''
