Hayden's girls soccer team improved to 2-0-1 on the season Monday night, riding a big second half to a 2-1 non-league road win over Class 6A Free State.
Monday's match was an 0-0 deadlock at the half before Hayden scored its first goal with 22 minutes left on a goal from senior Briahna Barnett off a long free kick.
Free State (0-2) tied the game at 1-1 before Hayden senior Jenessa Broxterman scored the game-winning goal off an assist from junior Jill Lenherr.
Hayden will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting Lansing in a 4 p.m. contest.

Washburn Rural girls soccer team made an early goal from senior Brooklyn DeLeye stand up for a 1-0 non-league victory over Kapaun Mt. Carmel Friday at McElroy Field.
DeLeye scored early in the match off an assist from Mackinly Rohn and the Junior Blues blanked the Crusaders for the match to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Senior Hailey Beck picked up the shutout in goal for Washburn Rural.
Washburn Rural will return to action Tuesday against Blue Valley Southwest at 5 p.m. in the opening round of the Olathe Northwest tournament at the College Boulevard Activities Complex.
West earns softball split with 5A power Seaman
Topeka West softball posted a statement win in last Thursday's United Kansas Conference doubleheader at perennial Class 5A stalways Seaman, with the 2-2 Chargers taking a 6-3 first-game decision to end a long losing skid against the Vikings.

For the seventh time in her Ichabod career and third time this season, Washburn University's Jaycee Ginter has been named the MIAA Pitcher of the Week after going 3-0 with a 0.00 earned run average in four appearances as the Ichabods went 4-0 with sweeps over Lincoln and Central Missouri.
Ginter posted two combined shutouts and a complete game, striking out 26 with two walks in 17.0 innings pitched while holding batters to a .140 batting average.
The former Shawnee Heights star tossed five innings in Friday's series opener against Lincoln, facing the minimum in five innings while striking out 10 Blue Tigers. She came in the second game in relief, tossing 2.0 innings and striking out five while allowing three hits.
In Saturday's first game against UCM, she tossed 7.0 innings while allowing three hits and holding the Jennies scoreless through 6 and 2/3 innings before UCM scored an unearned run. In the second game, Ginter tossed 3.0 innings in relief, striking out five with one walk.
The Ichabods will return to the field next weekend with conference twinbills at Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri.
