No. 15-ranked Washburn volleyball was pushed to five sets but prevailed to defeat Northwest Missouri State 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in Lee Arena.

Washburn held an advantage for most of the first two sets, winning 25-23 and 25-20, and in both the third and fourth sets the Ichabods reached match point but the Bearcats had responses in each one to win 28-26 and 30-28 sets.
In the fifth Washburn was able to create early separation and hold on, winning 15-8.
Neither side created much advantage for themselves early in the first set. Three straight kills from three different players put the Ichabods up 9-8 and after trading a few points Washburn was able to reel off four points in a row to go up 15-10.
Northwest made it 16-15 and pulled within one point twice more in the set but never led as Rachel Schwensen was able to end the set on a kill, 25-23.
The second set was dictated by Washburn's offense, which hit .432 in the set while knocking down 18 kills with just two errors.

On a nice breezy Friday night at Hummer Sports Park, Wichita Northwest sophomore Aaron Bohannon and the Grizzlies ran wild on Topeka High in a 70-7 non-league win over the Trojans.

Northwest racked up 299 total rushing yards, including 189 yards and five touchdowns from Bohannon.
Northwest also got plenty of help from its defense, which held the Trojans to 78 yards total offense and recorded a pair of pick-sixs.
The bright spot for the 1-4 Trojans bright came on a blocked Grizzlies field goal attempt which was recovered by Trojan sophomore Malachi Murph and returned 43 yards for the lone touchdown for the Trojans.
Topeka High returns to action next Friday at unbeaten Washburn Rural.

Hayden improved to 5-0 and 2-0 in Class 3A District 4 with a 27-0 Homecoming win over Perry-Lecompton Friday night.

The Wildcat defense stepped up early in the game after a Hayden turnover, stopping the Kaws on downs.
Junior Broderick Desch gave Hayden a 6-0 first-quarter lead with a 1-yard run (conversion failed), capping a 12-play, 76-yard drive.
Hayden boosted its lead to 12-0 in the second quarter when junior quarterback Jett Wahlmeier hit junior Jensen Schrickel with a 44-yard fourth-down touchdown strike (conversion failed) which capped a 10-play, 72-yard drive.
The Wildcats led 12-0 at halftime after turning the ball over deep in Perry-Lecompton territory late in the half to end a scoring threat.
Sophomore Kade Mitchell scored on a 21-yard run in the third quarter (Mason Becker kick) to put the Wildcats in front 19-0 after a four-play, 45-yard drive.
Senior Dom Ridley scored Hayden's final TD on a 10-yard run later in the third and Wahlmeier ran for the 2-point conversion to give the Wildcats their final margin. Ridley's TD finished off a five-play, 36-yard drive.

ROSSVILLE -- Silver Lake's football team was already far from full strength when it took the field for Friday night's annual War on 24 at Rossville and the Eagles lost junior Dysen Schooler to a scary injury less than five minutes into the game.

Even senior stars Tanner Martin and Blake Redmond, who turned in huge nights against the Bulldawgs, have been battling through injury issues, but Silver Lake coach Logan Pegrams had players step up when it mattered the most as the Eagles took a 42-28 win in their Class 2A District 3 opener.
"The program that we've built and we've inherited and that I played in, we harp on next man up and to see those guys stepping up in this rivalry, that brings special nights like this,'' said Pegram, a Silver Lake graduate who has never lost to Rossville as a player or coach.
"It's sweet. It's one of those rivalries that it takes a lot out of you as coaches, it takes a lot out of your players and they left it all on the field tonight. It was real nice to see the way the kids responded and the way that they did it together.That's what we've always talked about at Silver Lake is the No. 1 word is family, so to see them play as family was awesome.''

But baby Palmer Schurig, born on Sept. 11, had her own plan.
"One might say we didn't plan too well,'' Mitch said. "It was definitely a happy surprise.''
Mitch, who coaches the Ichabods' offensive line after earning All-MIAA honors at quarterback for the Ichabods, may be getting a little less sleep these days, but he gives his wife, who he met at Washburn Rural, huge credit for handling the bulk of the baby duties.
"I'm back at home for the second shift and sleep when the baby sleeps,'' Schurig said. ".Taylor's doing a great job at the house and holding it down and I try to help out when I can and where I can.
"You never feel more kind of helpless, but I try to be supportive mentally. It's definitely a switchup.''
