Hayden girls soccer coach Klaus Kreutzer knows that things are going to get tougher in a hurry, but Thursday's season-opening 10-0 non-league road win over Topeka West was a good start.

"I felt pretty good about it,'' Kreutzer said. "We're a pretty young team. We've got six or seven freshmen on the team and I thought they performed well.

"It's good to get (the opener) out of the way and I think we've got some things we can work on.''

Senior Briahna Barnett scored the only goal the Wildcats would need early in the match and Hayden would go on to build a commanding 6-0 advantage by halftime.

The Wildcats added four more goals after the break, ending the game by way of the 10-goal spread with 11:18 remaining.

Senior Jenessa Broxterman and freshman Carsyn Broxterman both had two goals apiece for the Wildcats, who also got goals from senior Piper Wrench, junior Jill Lenherr, freshman Reese Huscher, senior Sloan Sims and freshman Kayden Matthews.

In addition to her early goal Barnett was also credited with a pair of assists while J. Broxterman and junior Elaina Wolff also had assists.

Freshmen Kadence Watts and Lauren Borjon combined for the shutout in goal.

Hayden will play its second game in a row on Friday, hosting Cair Paravel Latin in a rematch of last year's Class 4A-1A state quarterfinal game, won by the Lions.
