Hayden's boys basketball team had been knocking on the door for awhile, including a two-point loss to Centennial League co-leader Highland Park and a four-point overtime defeat against Class 6A Topeka High in its previous two games.

Dwayne Paul's Wildcats knocked the door down Friday night, posting a 54-42 road win at Washburn Rural.

The Wildcats, who improved to 3-10 overall and 2-8 in the Centennial League, led all the way against Washburn Rural (6-8, 5-5), jumping out to a 14-6 first-quarter advantage and taking a 23-13 lead to the locker room at halftime.

Hayden increased its lead to 12 points (41-29) at the start of the fourth quarter and Washburn Rural got no closer than seven the rest of the way.

The Wildcats rode a 51-percent shooting night to Friday's victory, hitting five 3-pointers in the game.

Senior Trent Duffey led Hayden with 18 points while juniors Joe Otting and Jake Muller added 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Junior Jack Bachelor scored 18 points for Washburn Rural, including three 3-pointers, to tie Duffey for game-high honors while senior Quincey Kidd added 10 points. The Junior Blues shot 36 percent from the field.

Both Duffey and Muller canned two 3-pointers.

WASHBURN RURAL GIRLS 46, HAYDEN 32 -- Washburn Rural, third-ranked in Class 6A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, took control early en route to improving to 13-1 overall and 9-1 in the Centennial League with Friday's 46-32 home win over Hayden.

Rural took a 12-3 first-quarter advantage and led 21-8 at the half and 32-17 starting the fourth quarter.

Junior Brooklyn DeLeye scored 16 points to lead Washburn Rural, which won its eighth straight game, while junior MaRyah Lutz added nine points, senior Emma Krueger seven and sophomore Zoe Canfield six points on two 3-pointers for the Junior Blues.

Hayden (7-6, 5-5) hit just two of 20 shots from the field in the first half and shot 29 percent on the night.

Senior Carly Stuke led Hayden with 10 points, including two 3-pointers, while sophomore Lauren Sandstrom added nine points and senior Macy Smith eight.

Hayden freshman Brylee Meier left the game in the first half with an injury and did not return. 

CAIR PARAVEL LATIN GIRLS 49, MARAIS DES CYGNES VALLEY 42 -- Senior Jaley Barkley scored 18 points with three 3-pointers as Cair Paravel Latin improved to 8-6 on the season with a 49-42 road victory.

The Lions, who won their fourth straight game, built a 24-12 halftime advantage over MdCV (3-13) and led 39-24 at the start of the fourth quarter.

CAIR PARAVEL LATIN BOYS 70, MARAIS DES CYGNES VALLEY 40 -- Seniors Zach Clark and Noah Hastert powered Cair Paravel Latin to a 70-40 romp past Marais des Cynges Valley Friday night.

Clark scored 21 points for the Lions while Hastert had 16 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists and three blocked shots.

Cair Paravel improved to 11-3 on the season while Marais des Cygnes Valley fell to 7-9.

ROSSVILLE GIRLS 53, WABAUNSEE 25 -- Rossville used a 23-1 second quarter onslaught to turn Friday's game into a rout on the way to a 53-25 win.

Rossville, which improved to 8-7, led by just a 10-7 margin at the end of the first quarter but used its big second quarter to open up a commanding 33-8 halftime lead.

Sophomore Emma Mitchell led Rossville with 18 points while senior Caylee Douglass added 13 points (seven of eight from the free throw line) and sophomore Kinsey Perine eight points.

WABAUNSEE BOYS 56, ROSSVILLE 48 -- No. 4-ranked Wabaunsee (2A) survived an upset bid from Rossville to take a 56-48 victory despite 25 points from Bulldawg junior Kade Perine.

Wabaunsee improved to 11-3 on the season while Rossville fell to 2-13.

DE SOTO BOYS 53, SHAWNEE HEIGHTS 36 -- De Soto, a Class 5A final four team a year ago, built a 33-27 halftime lead over Shawnee Heights and broke the game open with a 19-9 third quarter on the way to a 53-36 United Kansas Conference road win.

De Soto, ranked eighth in Class 5A, improved to 12-2 overall and 4-1 in the UKC while Shawnee Heights fell to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the UKC.

Senior Carter Olson scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Shawnee Heights while sophomore Brennon Dodge added 12 points with a pair of 3-pointers.

DE SOTO GIRLS 56, SHAWNEE HEIGHTS 48 -- De Soto took a 56-48 United Kansas Conference victory over Shawnee Heights at Heights Friday night.

De Soto improved to 9-5 overall and 2-3 in the UKC while Shawnee Heights fell to 7-6 and 2-2.
