Junior running back Allen Baughman turned in a career-best performance to lead the way as Shawnee Heights picked up its first win of the season Friday night at Wetter Field, with the T-Birds rolling to a 46-23 United Kansas Conference win over Lansing.

Baughman, a 5-foot-8, 180-pounder, carried the ball 22 times for 222 yards and five touchdowns for the T-Birds, who evened their record at 1-1 overall and in the UKC.

Shawnee Heights, which finished with 343 total offensive yards, got a pair of field goals from senior Carson Christian.

The T-Birds also turned in a solid performance on defense, including interceptions from senior Jaye Jones and juniors Alex Dittman and Jayden Moore, who also forced a fumble.

Senior Sean Wunder was in on eight tackles, including a pair of tackles for loss, while senior Ben Penrod was also in on eight stops and junior Christian Gonzales six. Junior Taylen LeClere-Bryant recovered a fumble for the T-Birdss.

Shawnee Heights will travel to Seaman next Friday, with the city rivals meeting for the first time as UKC members. 

WASHBURN RURAL 28, DE SOTO 21 -- Washburn Rural rallied from behind for the second straight game, improving to 2-0 with a 28-21 road win at De Soto.

Rural junior quarterback Branton DeWeese threw for 214 yards and three touchdowns on a 15 of 31 performance  while senior Ma'Kenttis Adams rushed for 150 yards on 26 carries.

Junior Titan Osburn had three catches for 97 yards and a pair of touchowns while senior Lukas Hanks caught five passes for 49 yards and a touchdown and senior Amr Sabbarini had four grabs for 53 yards and a touchdown. 

Defensively, senior linebacker Ty Weber was in on a whopping 24 tackles while junior JC Heim blocked a punt and senior Wyatt Conklin recovered a fumble for a touchdown.

Washburn Rural will play its home-opener next Friday against Piper. 

ROSSVILLE 36, RILEY COUNTY 15 -- After having its 26-game winning streak snapped a week earlier, Rossville bounced back with a big 36-15 Mid-East League win over Riley County, which fell to 0-2.

Senior Kade Perine led the Bulldawgs with 138 rushing yards and three touchdowns while Rossville also got a 2-yard TD run from sophomore Seth Catron and a 3-yard TD from senior Braiden Hensley.

The Bulldawgs never trailed after jumping out to a 14-0 first-quarter advantage on touchdowns from Perine and Catron.

Rossville led 29-8 at the half, getting two second-quarter TDs from Perine, and the Bulldawgs added Hensley's touchdown in the third quarter to complete their scoring.

Rosssville will travel to Hayden next Friday to face the 2-0 Wildcats.

CAIR PARAVEL LATIN 56, DONIPHAN WEST 8 -- Cair Paravel recorded its first victory as a full KSHSAA member, rolling to a 56-8 road win over Doniphan West.

The Lions, who improved to 1-1, jumped out in front 16-0 in the first quarter and put the game away with a 28-8 second quarter, opening up a 44-8 halftime advantage.

Cair Paravel added a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to account for the final margin.

Jase Pavlik completed nine of 10 passes for 126 yards and four touchdowns while Evan Will was six of seven passing for 66 yards and a TD. Will also rushed for 41 ardss and a TD on four attempts.

Jachin Bonura had six pass receptions for 108 yards and three touchdownss while Ben Roeder had three catches for 54 yards and a TD.

Cameron Brian paced the Cair Paravel defense with 10 tackles.

Cair Paravel will host Marais des Cygnes Valley next Friday at Highland Park.

LEAVENWORTH 61, TOPEKA WEST 14 -- Topeka West senior quarterback Malachi Berg threw for one touchdown and ran for another, but the rest of the night belonged to Leavenworth, which rolled to a 61-14 United Kansas Conference win at Hummer Sports Park.

Topeka West, 0-2, 0-2, opened up an early lead on 67-yard touchdown pass from Berg to senior Kamen Jones and Berg later scored on a 55-yard run

The Chargers had no answer for Leavenworth quarterback Eddie McLaughlin, who rushed for 226 yards and scored five touchdowns on 13 carres as the Pioneers topped the 400-yard rushing mark on the night.

Topeka West will travel to De Soto for a UKC game next Friday.

HIGHLAND PARK 48, KANSAS CITY-SCHLAGLE 29 -- After snapping its 65-game losing streak last week, Highland Park posted its second straight Meadowlark Conference victory on Friday, taking a 48-29 league win at Kansas City-Schlagle.

Scots senior star Tre Richardson continued his red-hot start to the 2022 season, scoring eight touchdowns in the victory.

Highland Park led by an 18-15 margin at the half before opening up 30-15 and 42-23 leads in the second half.

The Scots will host Sumner Academy next Friday at Hummer Sports Park.

SEAMAN 70, KANSAS CITY-TURNER 0 -- Seaman posted its second straight lopsided United Kansas Conference victory, rolling to a 70-0 shutout over Kansas City-Turner.

The Vikings opened the year with a 58-14 romp past Topeka West and has now outscored its opposition, 128-14.

Seaman will host Shawnee Heights in a UKC game next Friday.

MANHATTAN 69, TOPEKA HIGH 7 -- Manhattan improved to 2-0 with a 59-7 home romp past Topeka High in the Centennial League opener for both teams.

The Indians led 42-0 at the half and 52-7 through three quarters.

Topeka High, 0-2, scored its lone touchdown on a 2-yard run from senior quarterback Peyton Wheat midway through the third quarter.

The Trojans will make the long trek to Liberal next Friday for a non-league contest.
