A 6-foot-4 senior, Brooks had 43 and 33-point games in boys basketball victories over Junction City (67-66 in overtime) and Seaman (74-58) last week as 12-1 Topeka West, ranked second in Class 5A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, pushed its winning streak to 11 games. In Friday night's Centennial League victory over Seaman Brooks became Topeka West's career scoring leader, moving past 2000 graduate Luke Dwyer, who scored 1,235 points. Brooks, who has scored 30 or more points in five straight games, has now scored 1,250 points at West.

EMMA KRUEGER, Washburn Rural

Krueger, a 5-11 senior, was named the most valuable player in the Lady Firebirds Winter Classic at Lawrence Free State after helping lead sixth-ranked Washburn Rural to the tournament championship. Krueger turned in an outstanding defensive effort in Rural's 3-0 week as the Junior Blues posted a 57-30 win over Leavenworth before knocking off No. 3-ranked Derby (54-37) and No. 1 Shawnee Mission East (47-38). Krueger scored 26 points in the tournament, including 10 in the championship game as Rural improved to 12-1 while pushing its winning streak to seven games.

A sophomore, Miranda won four gold medals in last Thursday's city swimming and diving championships, helping Washburn Rural win its third straight city team title by a narrow 530-526 margin over Seaman. Miranda won individual titles in the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 50.09 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 49.80 and also swam on the Junior Blues' winning 200 freestyle relay (1:33.25) and the 400 free relay (3:22.83).

LUKE PERKINS, Shawnee Heights

Perkins, a junior, won three gold medals in the city swimming and diving championships for the second straight season last Thursday at the Captol Federal Natatorium. Perkins won individual titles in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:01.54 and the 100 butterfly in 52.72 and also swam on Shawnee Heights' winning 200 medley relay in 1:43.21.

A 5-8 junior, Smith earned all-tournament honors after helping lead Topeka High to the tournament championship in the Capital City Classic at Topeka High. Smith scored 20 points with four 3-pointers in s 71-13 first-round win over Blue Valley Southwest and scored 13 points in the Trojans' 52-43 semifinal victory over Shawnee Mission East and had 20 points in High's 65-57 win over Wichita Heights in Saturday's championship game. Fourth-ranked Topeka High improved to 12-0 on the season.

Thomas, a 5-7 senior, earned a spot on the all-tournament team after helping lead Topeka High to the tournament championship in the Capital City Classic on the Trojans' home court. Thomas scored 19 points with four 3-pointers in s 71-13 first-round win over Blue Valley Southwest and scored 11 points in the Trojans' 52-43 semifinal victory over Shawnee Mission East and had 19 points in High's 65-57 win over Wichita Heights in Saturday's championship game as fourth-ranked Topeka High improved to 12-0 on the season.
