Veteran tennis coaches Duane Pomeroy of Topeka High and Kurt Davids of Topeka West knew that the dual match between the Trojans and the Chargers in Tuesday's West quadrangular at the Kossover Tennis Center would be a close one.

It couldn't have been any closer, with High and West battling to a 2-2 tie in the final match of the day to earn a share of the top spot in the quad with 2-0-1 records on the day.
"Kurt and I have been coaching against each other over three decades and we take turns beating the other one in both girls and boys,'' Pomeroy said.
"That's why we played Topeka High last to have a grand finale kind of thing,'' Davids said. "They got the singles and we got the doubles. I'm happy with the results and happy with everybody's effort singles and doubles.''
Topeka High shut out Shawnee Heights 4-0 and beat Basehor-Linwood 3-1 while West beat Heights 4-0 and Basehor-Linwood 3-1 to open the day before the USD 501 rivals squared off in the finale.
High senior Tres Lassiter went a perfect 3-0 in No. 1 singles to lead the Trojans while West's Collin McGee and Zander Rice went 3-0 in No. 1 doubles and Isaac Bowers and George Davidson went undefeated in No. 2 doubles.
Lassiter, the reigning city champion in No. 1 singles, dropped just one game on the game while McGee and Rice rallied from a 3-0 deficit against Topeka High to take an 8-4 victory.
