Cair Paravel Latin's soccer team got Topeka High's attention with an early goal in Tuesday's non-league contest at Hummer Sports Park.

But the Trojans answered with five unanswered goals, taking a 5-1 non-league win over the Lions.

Cair Paravel drew first blood with an early goal from senior Judah Congdon, but the Lions were shut out for the remainder of the contest as Topeka High took control, rallying for a 2-1 halftime advantage before tacking on its final three goals after the break.

"That's not always a bad thing,'' Topeka High coach Derek Snook said of getting Cair Paravel's early wakeup call. "It started in the middle of the field and its something we've struggled with since last year.

"We pass to the wrong color (jersey) and we were making a pretty good run on the outside and just passed it right to them and they caught us off balance and made a heck of a shot from about 20 yards out. They slapped us in the mouth early and away we go.''

Senior Carlos Acosta-Martinez had a goal and two assists for the Trojans, who also got goals from senior Santi Ovalle, senior John Martinez, sophomore Emyr Vargas and freshman Juan Lopez.

"Overall it was better,'' Snook said of High's performance. "We were a little frustrated in the first half and that comes with maybe being a little rusty because we hadn't placed since last Tuesday.

"But overall I think we came back well. I think we all started doing what we wanted to do and just trying to control the ball and it turned out fantastic, to be quite honest with you.''

Topeka High improved to 2-1 on the season, with its lone loss a 2-1 overtime loss to Lawrence, while Cair Paravel fell to 1-2.

The Trojans will travel to Shawnee Heights on Thursday while Cair Paravel will travel to Atchison-Mt. Academy.

Wildcats fall to Eudora on penalty kick

Hayden soccer fell to 0-2 on the season Tuesday night, dropping a heartbreaking 1-0 home non-league decision to Eudora.

The Wildcats and Cardinals battled to a scoreless tie for more than 39 minutes of the first half before Hayden was whistled for a foul in the box and Eudora junior Grant Hurla converted the penalty kick to account for what would be the only goal of the game.

Hayden threatened to tie the game late in the match, but Eudora was able to come up with the save just a few inches outside of the goal.

The Wildcats will be back in action Thursday, hosting Piper in a non-league contest.
