Washburn women climb to .500 with third straight victory

Washburn University's women's basketball team led from start to finish Tuesday night at Northwest Missouri, cruising to a 56-43 MIAA victory over the Bearcats.

Washburn won its third straight game and improved to 10-10 on the season while Northwest Missouri fell to 7-13.

Freshman Mackenzie Gamble hit 5 of 8 shots from the field and finished with 13 points, while senior Hunter Bentley contributed 12 points and 8 rebounds and junior Nuria Barrientos had 9 points and 8 rebounds. 

Washburn made its first three shot attempts of the game and jumped out to a 7-0 lead. A 3-pointer from Bentley put the Ichabods up 15-4 with 4:03 left in the opening quarter before the Bearcats put together a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 15-10.

Freshman Lauren Cassaday scored off an offensive rebound with four seconds left in the first to give the Ichabods a 17-10 first-quarter advantage.
 
The Ichabod defense held the Bearcats to just 5 points in the second quarter as Northwest Missouri made just 1 of 15 shots from the field, with Washburn extending its lead to 32-15 at the half.

Northwest Missouri used a 15-0 run to get back in the game in the third quarter, but the Ichabods still held a 38-30 advantage entering the fourth quarter and used a 7-2 scoring run to open up a double-figure lead that WU maintained for the remainder of the game.
 
Washburn shot 42 percent from the floor and made 6 of 12 from 3-point range while holding Northwest Missouri to 29.2 shooting. The Ichabods also out-rebounded the Bearcats, 40-23. 

Molly Hartnett led the Bearcats with 13 points and four steals. 
 
Washburn will play its final road game of the regular season on Thursday at Missouri Southern.
