Washburn women top Bearcats for second straight win

After scoring just 13 points of Saturday's MIAA game against Northwest Missouri, Washburn women's basketball team didn't exacly singe the nets in the second half, but the Ichabods' 28-16 second-half scoring edge was enough to pull out a 41-38 victory at Lee Arena.

The Ichabods improved to 9-10 overall and in the MIAA while the Bearcats fell to 7-12.

Senior Hunter Bentley scored the first basket of Saturday's contest, but that would be Washburn's only lead of the half as Northwest Missouri led 9-7 at the end of the first quarter and 22-13 at halftime after a 9-2 run to end the half. 

Washburn began the second half with an 11-0 run to take a 24-22 lead but there were ties at 24, 26 and a 28-28 tie at the start of the fourth quarter.

There was another tie at 39 before WU went on a 5-0 mini run, including a 3-point play from Bentley to go in front 35-30.

Northwest Missouri cut Washburn's lead to 39-38 with 26 seconds left but the Ichbods were able to hold on for the win.

Washburn shot 37.5 percent from the field on the day while limiting the Bearcats to 28.3 percent. WU held a 34-28 rebounding advantage.
 
Bentley finished with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists while Aubree Dewey added 9 points and 5 rebounds. Nuria Barrientos pulled down a game-high11 boards. 
 
Jaelyn Haggard led the Bearcats with 9 points on 3 3-pointers while Molly Hartnett added 8 points and 8 rebounds. 
 
The Ichabods will face the Bearcats again on Tuesday, Washburn traveling to Maryville, Mo. for a makeup game
